confused:

hi can someone tell me if you can get a train from Varanasi to Goa??? We are flying into Dehli, doing the golden triangle, train to varanasi and then want to enjoy a train ride down to Goa. I am not sure you can get a direct train from varanasi to Goa?

we dont want to have to go back to Dehli or golden triangle if we can help it. can anyone recommend an alternative route via train from varanasi that might let us see another part of India as we travel to Goa??

we have never been to India before and only have three weeks.

Delhi, overnight train to Varanasi(Shiv Ganga Express), then overnight train to Agra(Marudhar Express), then either to Jaipur (then to Delhi) or to Delhi, then a train to Goa(Trivandrum Rajdhani or Goa Sampark Kranti Express).

Welcome to indiamike.

Hi Steven, I seem to be just as confused as Laura. Are you saying one has to take a train to Goa only from Delhi or Jaipur?? I'm going on the same sort of 3 week trip as LauraMew but am hoping to take the train from Mumbai to Goa..is that possible? I have looked on the train schedule and can't seem to find one to Goa from anywhere. People have said that my route has too much backtracking but I can't seem to simplify it at all. I have planned to fly into Delhi, then train to Jaipur, train to Agra, overnight train to Varanasi then overnight again to Mumbai and somehow get from Mumbai to Goa(are flights available from Mumbai if no trains are available?)and finally a train to Kerala (Kochi if time permits) and fly back to Delhi...Is this a lot of backtracking and too much to do in 3 weeks? I may never get back to India so I want to see as much as I can. laura if yours is different from mine..how does it differ?...maybe yours is much better..thanks, any suggestions will be appreciated as we leave in 3 weeks...Jennifer

Mumbai-Goa trains (Madgaon is the main train station in Goa)

But looking at your Itinerary, you should forget Mumbai, a great city, but only if you're arriving or departing Mumbai.

You can get a train to Goa from Varanasi (1 day a week), though a long journey, a very well timed train as 2 night would be on board the train.

You can also get trains to Goa from Agra and Jaipur (1 day a week), but the trains from Delhi are much faster (and don't call at Agra or Jaipur), and Delhi is close to Agra (200km) and not too far from Jaipur.

The reason I suggest Delhi-Varanasi-Agra-Delhi (or include Jaipur after Agra) is to take advantage of very well timed overnight trains, use these instead of hotels for those nights, a great way to save money and end up nearer a place (Delhi) with great transport options to Goa.

If you want to also include Kerala, you should forget about Jaipur and allow more time for the south.
