I am loving this group and have found all sorts of very valuable ideas for our upcoming 4 week first time trip to India in December. Thanks again!

During the early part of December my wife and I (I am in my early 60's and she is in her mid 50's) will be in the Coorg area before heading out to Trichy and Thanjavur, where will we stay for 3-4 days before heading off to Madurai. We are past our travel via super inexpensive backpacking days and are able to and prefer to stay in 2 **, 3 *** star hotels.

1) Do any of you have any suggestions about how to get from Mercara(Madikeri), to Trichy and Thanjavgur?
2) Suggestions as to hotels in Thanjavur (price range about $25usd-$40usd)

3) Suggestions as to hotels in Madurai (similar price range as #2)
4) Suggestions as to what to see and do in 4-5 days in Madurai

From Madurai we will be in Hyderabad for a few days. I am a social worker/social service agency administrator and marriage counselor in the states and would like to visit and chat with some Hyderabad social workers/psychotherapists or HIV/AIDS or geriatric program folks while we are there. Any suggestions? How about something similar in Madurai?

Thank you all so much

Larry

From Mercara(Madikeri), to Trichy and Thanjavgur?

www.southernrailway.org shows that there is an express train from Mysore to Thanjavur. It goes via Trichy. (Train #6832). That is an option. If you are in Coorg, you should be able to get to Mysore or Bangalore. There is also a daily overnight express train from Bangalore to Trichy.

Trichy and Thanjavur are 50 or 60 kms away from each other. There is a ton of buses, but I would not recommend buses because they are almost always crowded. If you are staying in one city and visiting another just for a day, I would consider renting a taxi (with the driver) for the round-trip. The hotel you choose in either city should be able to help with this arrangement.

There are also passenger/commuter/slower trains between Trichy and Thanjavur. You will get to see the countryside between these cities. The above website is a good pointer. I have used this website only to search for trains between cities or for trains passing through a city. I have never purchased train tickets on the Internet and so I can't offer any feedback on it. These passeger trains carry a ton of merchandise/produce some times.

Near Madurai, Kodaikkanal is a nice place to visit. December is relatively cool and rainy in South India. Kodaikkanal will be even cooler and possibly get more rain. It is not an exotic city, but it is considered by Indians as a great hill station for a summer vacation. I have not been there in December.

If I may make a suggestion, Why don't you make your way up rather than criss crossing the place?

If you take the express 6732 (BANGALORE TUTICORIN EXPRESS) which starts from Mysore, you can reach Madurai; then take a taxi to Thanjavur. After Thanjavur, make your way to Trichy by car again. Then take the trains to Madras(chennai) and from there to Hyderabad. There are 2 trains from Madras every day.
Train no. Name Dept. time
2759 CHARMINAR EXP 18.10
7053 HYDERABAD EXP 16.45

Trichy being a junction, you can get train tickets to Madras quite easily. And even if there are no trains, there are buses and you can still take a taxi.
If you're going all the way to Thanjavur, don't miss Kumbakonam.

Tortuga's suggestion too is good. The only difference is that I'm suggesting that you make your way north consistently. Last stop Trichy for South India would make sense froma travel connection perspective.
