RE your senior citizens parents - they will automatically get lower berths because of age, and I guess you ticked the lower berth box on your form? The 4th person won't be a senior citizen is my guess. There is nothing to do on your part.
Every cloud has a silver lining!

2A Class - Side Berths are shorter ?

I have booked 4 journeys of 2A Class; all side upper and lower berth(2 of us travelling) in a hurry for fear of seats running out.
Just found out from the Sleep Class thread that side berths are only around 166 cm in length compared to the inner berths of around 190 cm.
Is the sizes the same for 2A Class ?
I am about 175 cm in height, will I have tough times ?
They are all overnight trips

2-tier air con (2A)

‬Lower berth = ‬length ‬185cm, ‬width ‬67
‬Upper berth = ‬length ‬182, ‬width ‬64

‬Distance between Lower and Upper berths = ‬83, ‬and between Upper berth and roof = ‬77+

‬Side Lower berth = ‬length ‬187, ‬width ‬55.5
‬Side Upper berth = ‬length ‬187, ‬width ‬54

‬Distance between Side Lower and Side Upper berths = ‬91, ‬and between side Upper berth and roof = ‬64+ (sloping roof)

‬As with all side berths, ‬they don't feel as long as they should, ‬that's because the length is absolute, ‬between ‬2 ‬fixed boards, ‬if you're in the normal berths (‬not side berths)‬, ‬your toes/feet can hang over the end of the berth.

The side berths in 2A are a lot longer than those in Sleeper Class, because there are only 8 pairs of side berths in 2A, there are 9 pairs in Sleeper Class.

steven,

Thank you for your info but your reply to me on the other thread left me shattered.
I have to start a new thread on cancellations and refunds, hope you can help to reply too.

Asian,
I wouldn't sweat it too much or do anything drastic like cancelling reservations because of the length of the side berths. I'm 180+cm and have overnighted in side berths before without too much distress and have another one booked for myself in a couple of months' time. Not exactly my favourite option but it will certainly do for one night.

##Please note that the Berths under "Lower Berth Quota" are earmarked for Senior Citizens travelling alone/ Ladies (45+ age) travelling alone and Pregnant Women travelling alone.

##This means, if two senior citizens together apply for two berths under Lower Berth Quota in the same Reservation Form, their request will NOT be considered, even if berths are available in this Quota, and they will get the tickets as per the status prevailing at that point of time. If they separately, they may get LBs, however, subject to availability.

##Please look at this:

Oki. The link to go with that message: Samit Roychoudhury's IndianRailStuff, http://indianrailstuff.com/. (Looks like the site is going through an overhaul, save for the homepage much of it appears to be dead. Let's hope it's back in full swing soon.)

Can anyone explain what 'open fast timings' means?

On the inaugural day the train will run on open fast timings.

##Open Fast Timings will apply only for "Inaugural run". From its next run, the train will run to the Timings indicated in the Time-table.

Thanks VSP

But what does 'Open Fast Timings' actually mean?

I understand that this will only apply to the Inaugural run and that the regular timetable will take over.
