Hi,
I'm planning on traveling to bodhgaya in feb. However, I do not want to miss out on the taj. I was thinking of flying into New Dehli. Travel from there to Agra (by train), and taking a train from Agra to Gaya. I saw that Agra and Gaya are not on the same train lines. Any suggestions? I do not have much time to get to Gaya. Perhaps two days. I'm more concern with my trip back. I would not want to miss my flight back to the US. How reliable are the trains from Gaya back to dehli? Please, please, any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

For non-direct trains, try this site: http://www.indiagroove.com/ . Best to check results with the official site just to make sure, http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/

As Agra isn't far from Delhi, you might want to use this as your hub if it works out to be more practical.

For getting out of there, in general the advise is to leave plenty of time for this. In fact I wouldn't recommend being dependent for it on some connection where if it falls through for whatever reason, you won't have the time to both arrange and catch an alternative means of transport to make it in time.

[edit]: I take it you'll have just a few days in India in total? I think exploring a bit of Delhi with perhaps a sidetrip to Agra (and nearby Fatehpur Sikri -- recommended, I hear, never been to either) should give you plenty to keep you occupied. If you like it, return to explore further somewhere in the future. Gaya is a long way out (12-18 hrs. by train from Delhi, barring any delays, which you can probably count on).

thanks. those were good links. I'm meeting a group in Gaya, so it's my main destination. I found "direct" train from agra fort to gaya junction. Those are correct stations, right? No agra city?

Hm. I've never been to either. Agra has several stations yes, I couldn't tell you how reachable they all are from e.g. the center. Any guidebook should be able to tell you.

Likewise, Gaya I don't know, but it would be safe to assume "Junction" would be some railhead serving it. Bear in mind you then still need to get to Bodhgaya. Again, any guidebook or some googling should be able to help you here.

Look for trains from Tundla Jn to Gaya, Tundla is about 25kms from Agra and it's on the Delhi-Calcutta mainline and has more trains to Gaya than Agra Fort (correct station), but some of the fast trains don't call at Tundla.

The Gaya-Delhi train should be reliable in Feb, though always allow for your train being up to 4 hours late, better safe than sorry.

There is one train from Agra cant
2178 +CHAMBAL EXPRESS DEP:AGRA CANTT 05:10 ARR:GAYA JN 23:05
But I wouldn't like to reach that late at any destination in Bihar.
Steven's suggestion of taking the train from Tundla is right.
BTW I couldn't find Tundla Jn. in the list of stations in the trains between important stations at the railway site.

##Though 2308 runs daily, it takes your entire day.

##But, if you can plan your departure either on Wednesday or Thursday, then you can make use of 2941 or 2986 which depart from Agra Fort at 16.00 hrs. and arrive in Gaya at 5.55 hrs. next day.

##In the return journey, you can take 2397 at 14.30 hrs., which runs daily, which starts in Gaya & which arrrives in New Delhi at 5.15 hrs. next day morning. This is being suggested because it is easy to secure accomodation in this train, since it originates in Gaya, when compared to the passing trains including Rajadhanis.
