Hi,
My friend had a booking in RAC status (in 18464 for 29-Oct dep) & the train was rescheduled multiple times with last update as 12 hrs late (leaving on 30-Oct 0200hrs). We kept checking the PNR status & it remained as 'Chart Not Prepared' until almost 0500 today. Interestingly, Train Enquiry indicates that the train departed on 30-Oct 0150hrs. No manual enquiry numbers were reachable to clarify the mess. Finally, around 7AM today, the PNR status has been updated as Chart Prepared. Is this a common practice of preparing the charts for a station well after departure of the train?

i would chalk it up to extra-ordinary circumstance. not normal at all. I have had the good fortune of being in one such train, enroute to a town with an airport to meet a friend.

the train, which started off from its origin, late by about 4 hours, took its own sweet time, about 10 hours after its scheduled time, to get to my station. The railways were not very helpful, the only way we could get updates was from a single person of someone's family, who was travelling from the origin station. And like typical india, instead of reaching the destination 12 hours before my friend arrived, i went there a couple of hours before, and all was well.

This was a special train, the ones that start with the number 0, i think they receive less love, when the original schedule gets disrupted.

This is not at all a common practice, but unfortunately happens sometimes. For reason unknown, sometimes IR does not / cannot prepare the computerized chart and prepares the same manually. When it is made manually then the web site shows 'chart not prepared', but the manual chart is made available at the station before departure.

The same happened with me during Diwali in 2011, when my RAC ticket kept on showing 'chart not prepared' on the IR website till 2 hrs before the departure of the train. Since I had to travel compulsorily, hence I read station and kept on dialing 139 only to hear chart not prepared. Finally the chart was put up on the board minutes before the train was shunted on to the platform.

Co-incidentally I have observed it happens during Diwali/summer holidays. Not sure if the reason is system not being able to cope with the load. Couple of years ago during Diwali or summer holidays, chart was not prepared even while the Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani was departing and lot of RAC passengers were could not board the train.

It seems to be related to the chaos related to late running of trains thru AP due to recent floods (not necessarily related to holidays perhaps).
Unfortunately earlier in the day, my friend tracked an earlier train thru TrainEnquiry which showed right time for departure till last minute & went to the station, only to reach there & see the train cancelled. The PNR status was faithful enough to indicate CHART NOT PREPARED & TRAIN CANCELLED. So, next time he relied on PNR status, but TrainEnquiry turned out to be more reliable. Perhaps the pre-IT era was more reliable, when you did not have enough information & would have to go to the station anyway - to see it to believe it!!!

Ironic that when we need the most up-to-date and trustworthy information, the system fails in all its glory.

Way too many ways to check, and each with its own input and output channel.

ok, this gets more interesting...
the TDR filed was 'rejected' indicating that TDR should have been filed online within 2 hrs of train departure - train left at 2AM so TDR should have been filed by 4AM. interestingly, until 7AM, one could not file TDR, as IRCTC still showed CHART NOT PREPARED!!!

Hmm, this now looks to be referred to Railway officials and or via consumer forum.

Train has started Nizamuddin at the moment.
It has not reached Jhansi - your boarding station.
Expect the charting to be done by 6 or 6 30 pm at the latest.
You could check around 5 or 5 30 onwards.
