Hi, I know some of you will be cringing just reading the title of this thread. But carrying on from WL and RAC questions asked in the appropriate thread here I ask another question.
As it is not possible to book tourist quota from abroad, could it not simply be done by a reputable tourist agent near CST station.
I email the agent the names, dates, train number and he does the rest offering me the service on a commission basis.

Seems simple to me but cannot see it suggested elsewhere...

I have a friend in Gokarna who could possibly do it for me but how do I physically get the tickets?

I know also I could wait for tatkal tickets but I would prefer to have the trip organized and booked... Last year I had no problem booking any tickets I wanted.

I think you need to present your passport to book through Tourist quota.... obviously agents can not have your passport while you are in other country.. hence this is not possible..

Right...you need to produce the passport at the counter for booking foreign tourist quota.
A person is rich when he has money but a person is wealthy when he has time...

Try your luck for foreign quota as soon as you reach India.
Next option would be tatkal.

Other way around for me, Tatkal comes up before I leave Europe, so will try that first. No train booking service at Mumbai airport (I think) so taxi to CST and try tourist quota....

Something will work out, it always does...

Tatkal is given out before 2 days of the date of journey.

What time/day do you land in Mumbai?

You best be prepared, because realistically, you've got virtually no chance of getting a Tatkal ticket.

Look for an 'autofill' program, do 17 practice runs on the IRCTC website, then be ready as the clock ticks over to 08:00 (IST), open the page, autofill, click enter, this way you have a small chance, oh, wait, IRCTC aren't accepting foreign credit cards.

You'll have to use cleatrip or yatra or make-my-trip, but trust me here, if you're not through the booking pages in the first minute, then pain in the next half a minute, you won't get Tatkal tickets.

Hi Steven,
I've a small query about online reservation and I know you are the right person to ask.
Suppose if I fill up all the details in the IRCTC website before 8 am and just at 8 am if I click GO...will it work? Or I'll have to fill up the details after 8 am.

Note: I'm asking this for tatkal bookings

I think the IRCTC website has a time limit in which the transaction has to be completed. If the time limit is crossed it logs the user out and he / she has to login again to complete the transaction. I am not sure of what is the limit though.

I think I am wrong Dhrub, I logged into IRCTC and waited and was not logged out. So you could try what you wanted to do in post # 10

I read some posts from travel agents (booking as individuals)

They seemed to imply that anything tried before 08:00 wouldn't work, and that starting at 08:00 and using autofil was the best option.

I'm certainly not the best person to ask about online booking, I very rarely book online.
