I am planning to travel from Delhi to Shimla by taking the following trains:

2311 Howrah Kalka Mail boarding at DLI reaching Kalka at 4.40 A.M.
251 Kalka Shimla Express leaving Kalka at 6.00 A.M.

Doubts:

1. As they say it in India, will it be "touch and go?" or is the time gap sufficient?
2. I do not have tickets booked for both the trains.

The Delhi Kalka train has 26 tickets under Tatkal quota and
the Kalka Shimla train has just 3 tickets under Tatkal

Considering the fight the one puts in at 8 AM for booking tatkal tickets and blah, does it make sense for me to plan the itinerary this way?

Or should I take the rickety Volvo?

Cheers,
Ashwin

There are lot of options to go to shimla specially from delhi. Get a volvo to chandigarh, then hop on to a himachal roadways bus to reach shimla.

How many days you have in your itinerary for shimla ??

thanks gautam.

the idea is to take the toy train.
if not, i can easily take a volvo direct to shimla and will be doing so.

just wanted to check the feasibility of going to shimla by taking trains

actually i am not planning to stay in shimla and will be moving on from there, on to kinnaur, spiti and lahaul!

Cheers,
Ashwin

Toy train is a must ride train. Carry a good cam and you will not be disappointed. The weather these days will be on the hotter side.

Update:

I've booked the Delhi - Kalka mail and will be reaching Kalka at 4.40 A.M.

I do not have tickets for the Kalka - Shimla leg. Can I land up in the station and get some second class (?) tickets for any of the trains?

Or will be shooed away?

Help!

Cheers,
Ashwin

Option 1: Check on the irctc.co.in website for ticket availability. You need to know the source and destination station codes for booking the ticket

Option 2: I think the train leaves in the morning, not sure though. Check the train schedule and pray you get a ticket anywhere.

I have obviously checked the ticket status of the Kalka - Shimla trains
(Not available) in irctc before asking whether tickets can be bought in the station itself (apart from the tickets issued through irctc)

And only 3 tickets can be booked through Tatkal (even this is available for just one train) which is insanely difficult to get (any irctc regular can vouch for this)

hope you got what i intended to ask.

thanks!

*bump*

Does anyone have this info?

"Are a few tickets made available on the station itself?" or

"Do all the tickets get booked online?"

Thanks!
Ashwin
