i am planning a 30 day trip to india covering about 12ish cities. i am trying to decide if i want to buy my train tickets online before my visit or if i want to buy them as needed in the individual cities. i understand that tickets can sell out and that i might get stuck with the most expensive class, but i would also like to allow for some flexibility in my travel plans.

our plans is: varanasi>kujaraho>agra>jaipur> ajmer>udaipur>jodhpur>jaisalme r>delhi

thanks for any advice!

What is that 30 day time-frame for your travel?
Which class do you wish to travel?

Tickets do run out in advance. In some off-season they run out only a few days in advance though.

A trick used by many is to book the same train tickets 3 days apart and cancel the ones you don't need if you change your plans. This allows some flexibility, though you loose a bit of money on cancellations.

The plan would work better the other way round, Jaisalmer first, Varanasi last, it would also allow you to get used to India before hitting the big cities, and would allow the overnight train from Agra to Khajuraho (it's a 02:00 arrival going the other way).

Book Delhi - Jaisalmer in advance, you'd know what date you want to travel, it may be an idea to book Agra-Khajuraho (Tu, F & Su only) as well mainly because the alternatives aren't great.

There is a train from Varanasi (17:10) to Khajuraho (05:15) running Mon, Wed and Sat
There is a train from Khajuraho (18:15) to Agra Cantonment (02:20) running Mon, Wed and Sat
Any specific reason for 3 days in Agra?

The timing of your visit is going be high season time. It is Diwali vacation period. People will be travelling with their families. Would be adivasble to book the tickets for Varanasi - Khajuraho, Khajuraho - Agra, Jaisalmer - Delhi. The other places could be covered by bus also if you are not able to get confirmed tickets.
