Is it possible for a hotel to book a train on your behalf?

If so, can the reservation be sent to you electronically, so you can book for trains before the city of the hotel--in other words a hotel in Varanasi booking you a train ticket from Delhi to Amritsar and then from Amritsar to Varanasi and then from Varanasi to Kolkata.

If this is not possible, how else can a train ticket be booked from abroad?

Sure they can! Just get your name, sex and age correct and you're gold.

I always book train tickets for all my relatives, no matter where they stay in India. Then I just print the e-ticket to PDF, mail it to them, and they just print it out at home or office. Or, maybe they just show the e-ticket on their smartphone/laptop to the TTE.

Yes hotels will offer this service provided you are staying with them and may ask for advance amount.

This used to be not that difficult -- but has just as of now become very difficult.

See http://www.indiamike.com/india/india...7/#post1325446 (post #1146 there) on how it used to be, but then your main avenue of Cleartrip.com and discussed there has just gotten next to impossible to use, as discussed here: http://www.indiamike.com/india/india...p-com-t159011/.

Just keep in mind that once on the ground, as in most countries you can book any stretch from pretty much any other station. But it obviously doesn't resolve the issue of how to book before you're there.

If you have the time, you could try to register with IRCTC (Indian Railways), using the method as also discussed in that same post on the "Booking From Abroad" thread.

OK, well for now, it seems that the only real option is to ask a hotel (which you pre-book online) to get train tickets for you...is there any other practice way for foreigners to get train tickets while they are in their home countries?

Besides having the time to go through registering with IRCTC as outlined on those other threads (if you do have the time, I think it would be every bit worth it, and it doesn't look to be even that crazy involved, you just need to be a little pro-active and persistent), no, presently not, I'm afraid.
