Indian Railways has decided to extend Tatkal reservation scheme to all Mail and Express trains in both AC and non-AC classes and bookings for the scheme will begin from November 14.

Tatkal reservation is presently available in about 100 trains mostly in non-AC class.

Thumbs up

intentions of the authorities are good but options have been kept open for malpractices.

when the scheme was first introduced, there used to be one whole bogey (2nd class sleeper) for tatkal passengers - bookings would start on the day of the journey and, based on documents of the traveller(to prove his genuineness), reservations would be given.

the scheme is now modified so that a few tatkal passengers can be accommodated in each compartment.

one whole bogey can take upto 75 passengers - how these 75 will now be distributed is the million dollar question!!!!

If you're willing to pay a premium for your train ticket at the last minute, that's tatkal. Not as bad as the airlines though. The extra charges are fixed. For a quick look at the rules

So how will it work??

The following seats/berths will be reserved for Tatkal reservation in every train, depending on the classes of accommodation the train offers.

In 2-tier air con there will be 4 berths per coach.

In 3-tier air con there will be 6 berths per coach.

In Air con chair car there will be 6 seats per coach.

In Sleeper class (not air con) there will be 10% of the accommodation (7 per coach) or a whole coach (72), whichever is less.

Remember, you can only use Tatkal reservation to book tickets for the entire length of the trains’ journey, though you can choose to board the train at a different station.

Just to clarify, if you were in Pune and you wanted to book seats on the Mumbai - Chennai express, you would have to pay for the whole journey (Mumbai to Chennai), though you would be allowed to board the train at Pune.

I would imagine there are going to be some long, long queues every morning at the reservation offices in the big cities, if I wanted to book tickets, I would be there before 6 o'clock. (Reservations to be made from 08:00 on the day before the train is due to depart.)

Additional charges for booking seats/berths using the Tatkal reservation scheme.

First class (air con & non air con) reservations can't be made using Tatkal.

2 tier air con (2A) - Rs 300
3 tier air con (3A) - Rs 300
Air con Chair Car (CC) - Rs 150

Sleeper class (SL) - Rs 150
Bookable 2nd class seat (2S) - Rs 50

The same charges are added to the train ticket for short or long distance journeys, and for the fastest or the slowest trains.

Tatkal tickets misuse

Have any of you ever got Tatkal tickets? I remember those days when I used to live in Bangalore and used to to station at 5AM to get tickets. But alassss....see there are hundreads people already in line.

Most of these are agent-punters who grab tickets in tatkal and sell them overpriced in black.

Any experiences?

I have used them a few times and I have never been at the station at 5am! more like 10am. They are a great way of getting a ticket when the tourist quota is full.

I too have purchased Tatkal tickets without having to queue up early morning. Reaching the window at 7.45 a.m. was good enough. This was at Bandra Terminus, Mumbai. Possibly my experience would have been different had I gone to Churchgate or CST.

Tatkal reservation from internet (old thread)

Has anybody made Tatkal reservation on internet?

Considering that there are so few bearths and so many people trying for it, it would take few minutes to finish all of them (at least 3AC and 2AC).

I was wondering whether it's better to go for a travel agent rather than logging on at 8 am and trying over my slow dial-up connection.
