This thread is for people outside India who are having problems setting up their IRCTC/Cleartrip accounts for purchasing rail tickets.

If you are encountering problems here are a few things you can try:
  • Make sure that you are not trying to register between 07.00 and 11.00 Indian Standard Time when the registration system is closed.
  • If you have had a previous account do not use the same mobile phone number to register again – it will be blocked.
  • Make sure that the 'made up' 10 digit mobile number that you use to register is not an obvious combination of numbers such as 1234567890. Somebody will already have used it and your registration will fail.
  • Don't select a number starting with a 0 as your 'mobile number'.
  • Try using a different Internet Browser while you attempt to register.
  • Try calling the the IRCTC Careline at +9111 393 40000. Some people have had their problems solved by a call to the helpline.

If all else fails post details of your problem on this thread.

NOTE: If you have not opened a Cleartrip or IRCTC account yet, read this article first: Setting up your IRCTC and Cleartrip accounts for buying railways tickets from abroad

I am supposed to not be here after yesterday's massacre at Twickenham. See above.
Yes, ticket I have although it was just a trial to see if the system worked. I book my ticket to travel on the 14 th march for July. I would have got a nasty shock indeed had last week's buisness occured then.
As regards Cleartrip, the train picturegram disappeared sometime last year and then suddenly reappeared on saturday morning. I was trying to synchronise with Irctc. I can go as far as availability then, 'wait,' appears and not much else. In 4 weeks I need just 2 tickets, I will keep you all informed as to what happens.

Again apologies for my little outburst but,Irctc do bring out the worst in some of us. I trust in 4 weeks I can safely report back.
Greetings,
Homerus.

Post office in registration form

Help!
I'm at last about to try my luck with a new IRCTC registration. Have just had a look at the registration form to be filled in.
Does anybody know what they mean by 'Post Office'?
I have an address (street plus house no.) and I live in a city with a postcode, but I have no idea what I should put as post office...

Put whatever. The website, does not take a 5 digit US zipcode either, so I added another digit

It is some while now since I registered, but I don't remember this question? Is there an option to select your "foreign status" to start, this may avoid some of the specific Indian registration questions?

I believe "Great Britain" was one residential option listed in the drop down menu, but it did not work, one finds "United Kingdom" listed also, which I found to work for me.

As nycank mentioned, many overseas postcodes don't work either, I think one just puts a random 123456, but again, I can't quite remember.

Post office is a mandatory field in addition to city, post code etc. It appears even after I select my country. I dont want to mess up things. Indian bureaucrats are so extremely fussy.

I think it is more about getting the website to somehow accept whatever you put in. Maybe put the nearest post office name to where you live, what else can one do?

Have you got much time to sort it all out, when do you need tickets for?

Good luck.

The TTE does not care; nor do many, even look your your e-ticket. I speaketh from first hand account. Just make it fit. Add digits, since many countries use digits for postcodes.
