This thread is for people outside India who are having problems setting up their IRCTC/Cleartrip accounts for purchasing rail tickets.

If you are encountering problems here are a few things you can try:
  • Make sure that you are not trying to register between 07.00 and 11.00 Indian Standard Time when the registration system is closed.
  • If you have had a previous account do not use the same mobile phone number to register again – it will be blocked.
  • Make sure that the 'made up' 10 digit mobile number that you use to register is not an obvious combination of numbers such as 1234567890. Somebody will already have used it and your registration will fail.
  • Don't select a number starting with a 0 as your 'mobile number'.
  • Try using a different Internet Browser while you attempt to register.
  • Try calling the the IRCTC Careline at +9111 393 40000. Some people have had their problems solved by a call to the helpline.

If all else fails post details of your problem on this thread.

NOTE: If you have not opened a Cleartrip or IRCTC account yet, read this article first: Setting up your IRCTC and Cleartrip accounts for buying railways tickets from abroad

I was able to use my old account by listing a new non-Indian mobile number, paying the 100 rupees with a non-Indian card, and then getting the SMS code on the new number.

But booking tickets, I am getting only email confirmations, no SMSs on the mobile number.

No need to hassle with getting a printout. A screenshot will do.

From the confirmation:

"Please take a screenshot of ERS i.e. Virtual Reservation Message(VRM) OF YOUR TICKET FROM YOUR Booked Tickets History page .You have to carry this VRM or SMS send to you along with any one from the listed identity cards . . . ."

My Irctc account got closed for some reason. I openend a new email address and tried to register with Irctc but it just does not go. It just says, enter a valid email address. I have made many attempts to register and I thought it went through around 04:00 cet last week. Perhaps it vanished into the ether. I emailed customer care and all I get back is # I'd number this and that.
I am still using the same gsm number whether that is the problem I do not now. Not overly confident of phoning them.
My cleartrip still works and I not planning to visit India until next year so it is not such a problem but I would like to get it fixed.
Greetings,
Homerus.

Sadly the system seems to work well for some, but not at all for others.
IRCTC have changed the "rules" over the last year or so, so a new "fresh" registration may be the way to go.

It is not possible to just buy tickets through cleartrip any longer, you DO have to have a valid IRCTC account too, and to be able to enter the IRCTC code on the cleartrip site.

Best advice to register seems to be to follow the info on the "maninseat61" website.

I am sure you will get it sorted in less than a year, and the good news is that you can buy tickets as a foreign tourist up to a year in advance, albeit at a premium price!

Solving problems with IRCTC/Cleartrip registration

When I lost my account, closed for no known reason, after some years of light use (hardly a suspect tout!) there was no meaningful support whatsoever. Nothing that came with a mile of useful.

I had to open a new account. And I had to do that with a different phone number. I think they might require unique mail and unique phone for every account.

Their system has changed enormously since then... And, I have to admit, improved out of all recognition. I used to dread booking a rail ticket: now, at least for Indian residents, it is almost as easy as buying from Amazon.

Hi, help needed please.
I have been registered & using Cleartrip & the IRCTC websites for tickets for past 6 years. When logging onto IRCTC yesterday It redirected me to the International user payment page immediately after login. I paid the 122 rupees. No confirmation to email or mobile.
I've tried logging in several times but he immediately sends me to the International user payment page.
How do I get access to IRCTC to enable me to buy tickets for this years travel?
Many thanks

Hi,

The process for International ticket purchase has changed in the last year or so.

Most advice seems to be to try a new fresh registration. You would need a different email address, and a different mobile phone number. The IRCTC site now accepts and requires a foreign mobile number to be registered.

The man in seat 61 tends to have the latest info: https://www.seat61.com/India.htm

Once you get registered again, you need to link your IRCTC and Cleartrip accounts, which is straight forward.

Some folk seem to be lucky, others try the same info, and fail. Such is India, I guess! I did manage to "upgrade" my existing IRCTC account, but it sounds as if your attempt is not working correctly.

There used to be some very knowledgeable folk on India Mike with train and rail info, but they have vanished in the last few years.

Good luck, let us know how you get on?

Ed.

Hi,
I have been trying to open up new account since March.
My old account was closed but I knew that I would need a new email address but does it mean that I need new mobile phone number? If so, how do I register my number?
Irctc also ask for, 'mail from registered mail Id.' I asked my Internet provider what that could mean; they were absolutely clueless.
When I tried to register I made a absolute basic howler. I typed in a new user Id but never pushed the availability button. Alas, I only noticed that a few days ago and corrected that. I certainly won't be on their Christmas card list this year.
Thanks for any help you can render.
Homerus.
P.S.
I have phoned customer care but it did not go very far.
Greetings,
Homerus.

I don't know about your specific problems, but the best advice seems to be to start over again.

Just get a new basic email, I used a new yahoo email address.

Maybe you could try to register using a different computer, sometimes sites recognise and get confused by a change of details on the one computer?

Certainly choose a new username, etc for the fresh start.

I assume that there will be somewhere to add and pay for the new non-india mobile phone number.

Sorry I can't be more specific!

I just opened the sign up link on seat 61 as opposed to go ogling the 1st generation sign up page that I tried in march. A completely different page. The 1st generation sign had no,'accept conditions box.'
The link from seat 61 does not accept my all digit postcode so I still can't send it.
More confusion.

It may not be any use to you, but I noticed this on the seat 61 site just now:

" At last there's a quick & easy way to book Indian train tickets online with an international credit card. Reliable Asian ticketing agency 12go.asia has been selling train tickets for Thailand & Vietnam for several years and as of April 2018 it sells Indian train tickets too, with no need to create an account or register at irctc.co.in, saving hours of frustration. It makes booking a train as easy as booking a flight.

12go charge a small fee, but Indian train tickets are so cheap it makes little difference. Given the the time & aggravation you'll save compared with trying to register at irctc.co.in (option 2 below) I recommend booking with 12go.asia if it sells the journey you want."

They only sell some popular routes, but maybe worth a try?

I am at the click to login link with Otp but it goes straight to booking and I can't see where I put in the Otp.
It will have to keep for tomorrow.
Nite.
