This thread is for people outside India who are having problems setting up their IRCTC/Cleartrip accounts for purchasing rail tickets.

If you are encountering problems here are a few things you can try:
  • Make sure that you are not trying to register between 07.00 and 11.00 Indian Standard Time when the registration system is closed.
  • If you have had a previous account do not use the same mobile phone number to register again – it will be blocked.
  • Make sure that the 'made up' 10 digit mobile number that you use to register is not an obvious combination of numbers such as 1234567890. Somebody will already have used it and your registration will fail.
  • Don't select a number starting with a 0 as your 'mobile number'.
  • Try using a different Internet Browser while you attempt to register.
  • Try calling the the IRCTC Careline at +9111 393 40000. Some people have had their problems solved by a call to the helpline.

If all else fails post details of your problem on this thread.

NOTE: If you have not opened a Cleartrip or IRCTC account yet, read this article first: Setting up your IRCTC and Cleartrip accounts for buying railways tickets from abroad

Mostly they reply within a day or three, some members reported they had to wait for a week.

I hope you followed the steps as described in the man on seat 61.
That is the most up-to-date procedure. You can book direct on the IRCTC website.

Thanks. Too bad. I need it because of the availeble seats. Waiting allready 2 days.

I did contact an Indian man who can book tickets for me with a 4$ charge. Maybe that will work for the tickets.

You can always send a mail to care@irctc.co.in and explain your problem.

Use the number in their last mail in the subject line of your mail.
Also mention the user-id that you used for registration, remember it is case-sensitive.

Some people reported they had success with a new attempt, using a fresh email-address and user-id.
You don't need cleartrip.
Be sure that you follow the steps described on this site http://www.seat61.com/India.htm#book...from%20outside

Just had a really good experience registering with IRCTC.
I needed to create a new account. My previous one required several email to get activated, due to lack of an Indian mobile.
The system now allows the use of an overseas mobile, on payment of INR100 on registration.
The process worked more or less smoothly.
The website froze once, and I had an abortive attempt with booking a ticket on Cleartrip as I needed to undertake additional steps not yet specified.
In the end, after less than 20 minutes work, I registered, received an OTP to my Australian mobile, and was able to buy tickets.
I'm not sure how well publicised this information is, and the easing of difficulty of registering overseas.

I'm back after a long time, to report that IRCTC now accepts international mobile numbers! Yay!

I logged back on to IRCTC a month or more back, expecting to book as I had an account for a few years, previously sending email to care@irctc and activating the account. Alas last month I couldn't get into the account, they said I needed to register my international mobile. I tried to use my UK number but I was in limbo as it had been used for a previous failed attempt.

Today I tried again and the site accepted my UK mobile, they sent me the OTP, and I got in! They charged me a 100 or so rupees to register the international mobile.

Great progress!

It costs me Rs.10 to send an international SMS to a UK number. But... I wonder if you get further messages, such as booking confirmations, without any further charge?

Hi Caramello,

Not sure if this is actually a reply to your post. This forum is completely different from what it was when I was here last.

I had a Cleartrip account for a few years, it worked fine, but I managed to mess up things a few weeks ago, in connection with my mobile number. Now I cannot book tickets with Cleartrip or IRCTC. I think I have to create a new account since I couldn't find ANY option to access my profile and change/correct my mobile number.

Did you use the same e-mail address for your new account? And the same mobile number you had before? I dread creating a new account because I remember just how cumbersome it was years ago, but I suppose I have no choice if I ever want to buy a train ticket again.

Hmm ... can't find a 'Submit' button now... is it me or do others have the same problem...

Hi,

The whole system has changed in recent times, so those of us who had it all sorted a few years back are having to re-register or add new information.

I just created a new free yahoo email account, and followed these instructions:https://www.seat61.com/India.htm#Buy-tickets-online

Ed.

Thanks Ed, will try that. Although I do remember that a few years ago the Seat61 instructions were not quite up to date. I suppose they are now.
