The Railway Board has decided not to allot side middle berths from July 13 in AC or sleeper coaches of all mail and express trains,

including Garib Rath, running across the country. The railways is busy removing side middle berths for the convenience of passengers.

The board had recently announced that all such berths would be removed phasewise from mail and express trains following complaints from passengers about the hardship being faced by them while undertaking journey on the side middle berths. For women and elderly passengers allotment of side middle berths was kind of torture during journey. The board was flooded with complaints about the travails of journey on these berths.

Yes, but until last April at least there were still quite a number of them around, so it's good to hear their abolition may now be that much more final indeed.

I think you did not read carefully: these berths will no longer be allocated with effect from July 13 - that is 3 days from now.

It says clearly in the report that side middle berths are being scrapped from the Garib rath trains as well.

Dear Indizen,

##If the SMBs in GR are taken-out, then the passengers have to pay "normal fares" instead of "concessional fares".

##Can you kindly give the link to the Report to which you have referred?

The very concept of Garib Rath with AC with concessional rates has one of its roots in the SMB concept. What I know is that SMB will remain in GR trains.
....life is a journey.....and the journey is more important than the destination........

No.
It was a report in Google news on 9 July.
It clearly stated that SMB will be removed from garib rath trains.

NR starts removing side middle berths
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Lucknow: Northern Railway (NR) will start removing additional berths from its trains from Wednesday. From Thursday onwards passengers will not get reservation for the side middle berths of sleeper coaches.

As a temporary arrangement, NR, in few of the trains had folded the middle berths and screwed it up with the upper berths so that it cannot be used. But some of the trains still have it for use. Though passengers will not get reservation on it but they might still be in use till permanently removed.
The decision to remove the berths has come on the orders of the railway board. The middle berth was added in the trains under aim to cut down the waiting list. But railway board has taken the decision to remove the additional middle berth in keeping with the passenger comfort.

These were introduced in July 2008, and were really cramped and uncomfortable. They have been removed now.
