I was thinking of booking all my train journeys online. It just seems much more convenient. Of course if i miss a departure or something drastic happens i could be buggered but i'm factoring in a day here and there if plans go a bit wobbly. Anybody else done this or is there any advice against doing this?

As ever; it depends. If you're only spending a short time in India, prebooking is a must. If you're tehre longer, go with the flow and book your tickets while you travel. There are still tourist quota available, even if the website is sold-out.

foreign quota

Hi, was trying to book Ajmer to Udaipur for december under foreign quota but web site said not available for all dates for a month. Is this because foreign quota goes on sale later than 2 1/2 months in advance? thanks!!!!!

You can't book foreign tourist quota at any website, only at foreing tourist office in major indian cities (for example, at New Delhi Train Station)
Past the point of no return...

what dates are you trying? That's holiday and LTC travel season so tight availability is not a surprise
