Hi,

I have a question about the seating classes in Indian trains. I have a waitlisted ticket on a train between Agra and Udaipur next week. The qeue place doesn't look like it's going to improve much, so I also bought a second sitting ticket as there were still a few available, thinking I'd use it as a last resort if I couldn't get something through Taktal or the tourist quota.

Now, I was under the impresion that second sitting was the nightmare class with people pushing and shoving for a seat or standing in the aisle overnight, but now I'm a little confused as I've also read in a couple of places that what I thought was second sitting is actually unreserved class, which you cannot buy in advance. My confirmed ticket has a coach number and a seat number. So, I guess this is a long winded way of asking are second sitting and unreserved class the same thing or not? Does my reserved seat number actually mean something and my trip will be not so terrible or will I have battle my way on like everyone else?

Thanks!

2S is a Reserved class with only seating and is used for day journey trains. Being reserved the tickets have coach and seat numbers. These coaches will be numbered D(x) in the ticket.
General class is the unreserved class, are numbered as GN(x) and are located to the front and back of a train.

Thanks for the reply. So, even though for this overnight trip I'll be sitting on seats that aren't so comfortable, I do have a reserved place and probably won't have someone sitting on my lap, is that right? How cold will it be during the night in this class?

PNR: 2115218992

Thanks!

Book train 12963 from Bharatpur to Udaipur it has availability in 3A and SL

Bharatpur is 55kms from Agra, but if you plan to visit Fathepur Sikri, Bharatpur is only 25kms from FS

Hi Collector -

As the Google results show, you should get bus services between Agra & Bharatpur (approx 1.5 hours of journey time during the day considering heavy fogs in the winter mornings). The alternates are obviously Cab services & train services.

In case you choose to avail a train, ensure that you are leaving sufficient room for reaching at Bharatpur station, so that you don't miss the onward journey train.

I guess from your response that you would be starting from Agra, in which case a cab service would be the easiest. It should be INR 7/8 per km for a small Non A/C car (Ambassador/Indica etc). This would be like Rs. 400-500, unless the cab wants to charge for his return as well. In such case probably a bus is the way to go (less comfort, less money )

Disclaimer: I have personally never traveled between Agra & Bharatpur. Cross-posted with Steven, who, I understand, has traveled in this sector.
Did you wear the other person's shoe today?

Thanks Steven & Indracal. I've booked tickets on the train from Baharatpur instead and will make a point of visiting Fathepur Sikri.

Cheers!

I guess I made a bit of goof up!

@Collector, please note that by the above phrase (text in bold), what I meant was that normal journey time from Agra to Bharatpur would be 1.5 hrs (approx) subject to the mode of transport, unusual road conditions etc. However, in case you are traveling in winter mornings, which is expected to be very foggy, you should not count on that 1.5 hrs figure.

I'm sorry if this inconvenienced you in any way.
