Hi friends,
I'm just back from Varanasi. We had a reservation in Vibhuti Exp on 15.02.2011 from Varanasi to Howrah.
When we reached Varanasi station we came to know that our train was 4 hours late.
We went to the Railway's retiring room which is located on the first floor of platform no. 1. The railway staff who was on duty informed us that there were no rooms. After requesting him he said that he can provide us room but without any money receipt and the amount was higher than the railway's rate. He assured us that we can stay till our train departs (the train ultimately departed at 2.30 am).

Without any choice we had to end up taking the room by paying 400/-.
I think there should be some vigilance of Railway authority to check such scams.
A person is rich when he has money but a person is wealthy when he has time...

I can’t help but smile, these type of things are so common in India in every field that they are not called scams, but Indian lifestyle.

And this is why...you could have easily spent 4 hours on platform, which is so common for travellers, but you went for the easy way so you too are part of the scam.
If you find my posts confrontationist, please bear, I am an old frustrated guy who has nothing better to do than sit on rocking chair and curse the world whole day

You are true to some extent...

I am also the part of the scam without any choice as there were other people ready to take the room in the same way as I did...

And our train departed 8 and a half hours late...

You had a choice and you choose to pay. You may feel you didn't have a choice because of the 8.5 hrs delay, but that you didn't know that then.

Most times (again not always but most) we have the choice to NOT bow to this fraud, but we choose the easier path or path of least resistance.

I would have chosen to spend the time on the platform.

BTW: Never heard of that sort of thing is this part of india. May be didn't use them often.

I agree with you...but things depends on situation...

I too have experience of spending 10 hours at Delhi platform. But this time we were really exhausted and I'm not here to complain but just sharing my experience with you all.

The Station Master is usually in-charge. Wondering why you never made a complaint at-least to whomever on duty.

Though the Station Master/ Manager is in charge. But there was a Ticket Collector in charge of the reservation at retiring room.
