From Steven's full write up on the paper reservation form: http://www.indiamike.com/india/india...n-forms-t7485/

Station from/to………
&
Boarding at - Reservation up to……..

This is the part that used to confuse the hell out of me, you can ask three railway officials about it and receive 3 different answers.
=============
I am going only from Jaipur to Bharatpur AND I do not want to use this train to continue onto Agra. This is NOT a break journey reservation.

1) I am taking train 2987 JP GWL Intercity it originates in Jaipur and completes its journey in Agra.

If I am correct Station from is Jaipur, and To is Bharatpur (not Agra).

2) Boarding at Jaipur (that part always seems simple)
Reserving upto Bharatpur (this one also seems simple)

============
Part of my confusion is reading a post here somewhere that indicated that Station from and To should always be the Origination point for the entire train and the To is the termination point for the train. THEN the Boarding at and Reservation upto portions indicate what portion of this you are using (namely, the station of where you are boarding and where you are getting off. So according to this post the To should be Agra but my Reservation upto would be Bharatpur.
=================

My second in India purchase will be a trip from Gaya to Kolkata. The actual train starts in New Delhi - this is the opposite pattern of above. Above I am getting on at the Origination station but getting off before terrmination station. For this latter one I am Boarding after the Origination station but going to the Termination station.

I understand the concepts but need to know how to fill out the form properly.
==============

Cancellation/refund
I purchased an i-ticket online - 2 mistakes should have been an e-ticket and it was not the train I really wanted. To cancel/refund this in India. I understand that A) go to any ticket office; B) have reservation/cancellation form filled out - do you circle the word Cancellation? C) have mypaper ticket and identification with me. I assume that refund is to the original credit card that was used? Do they ask to see that credit card? Hopefully not as it will not be available.
============
Thanks for the help.

No time to explain; but just put down the places you're traveling from and to in both sections (From & To. also Boarding at & Reservation up to) in both examples (Jaipur to Bharatpur & Gaya to Howrah).

Hope this explains.......

The diagram shows the concept. Don't bother about the boarding station if you are "sure" of your boarding point ( that is the "From" station is your boarding station too ). Some times we book from a station and keep the boarding station , say a few stops down. At times it helps to have a bit of flexibility on the traveling plan. Typically this boarding station would be 1 or 2 stops down from your FROM station...The railways is just trying to keep your boarding plan a bit elastic

...just imagine that you have not turned up. The railways have to allot the seat to the next waitlisted passenger. The question is till when they will wait for you to arrive? The answer is till the boarding station. That is, if you have opted for any.

Thank you

Thank you both.

Steven for clarifying your longer excellent write-up:
"No time to explain; but just put down the places you're traveling from and to in both sections (From & To. also Boarding at & Reservation up to)..."

And Beach ... Yes this is the understanding I already had but thanks for the clear explanation.

Edward
