Hi all!
Great site for start. I tried to look but couldn't find any info about this so here's my question:
Which classes in Indian trains are best for photographing? I mean, is it true that some classes got darkened windows etc? Would like to snap some pics from train, landscapes etc, u know. Thanks for any info

Avoid Air Con where the windows are sealed and darkened. I think you will be best off in 2nd class sleeper. It has the added advantages of being cheap, only having a window frame, and you are more likely to meet interesting people.

well, the best class for photography is the second class sleeper.
You cannot do much in other classes except sleep.

then there is the unreserved second class seating option. If you want to picture masses of people in a train then you go here.

For all the other things, second class sleeper is the best.

The General compartment - ie non AC sleeper class.

You can also click lots of pictures of co-passsengers - with their permission.

Hi Suhari!
Taking pictures from and within a running train is fine but try to avoid taking pictures in big stations like New Delhi especially if you are carrying a big SLR kind of equipment. Taking pictures of railway property from railway premises is not allowed in India by rule unless you have obtained permission for it. But its enforcement depends on fancy of RPF (Railway Protection Force). More often than not, they are looking for a quick buck from violator. If asked by someone, tell your intentions rather than argue and things should be fine.
