I made a mistake in entering the ID number while making my reservation online. So I'll not be able to present the required ID card when I travel. How big is this issue? Can I provide an alternative ID that has the same name but a different ID number? How strictly is this rule enforced in Southern Railway?

I'm thinking if I should cancel my earlier reservation and book a new one. But then the current waiting list is quite long, so the only choice will be to book in a different train.

Thanks.

Is your name the same as your booking etc. with the card with the wrong no.? If it was me, I think I would leave the current booking, explain you made a mistake re the no. and show proof of identity with your passport and one other document e.g. driver's licence or something, which has the same name as the one you have on your ticket booking.
I haven't travelled Southern Railways - only Northern with an e-ticket. Half the time they don't ask for the identity proof.

Don't cancel, just take some ID with you with the same name and a picture. You'll be fine.

The other thing as 'proof' too will be the fact no one else will turn up for your booked seat/berth. You have a ticket as proof you did the booking, even if a mistake in no. I don't think it's a big deal.

Agree that it's not a real problem. In six weeks of travelling on trains around the south we were only asked once for the ID on the e-ticket, and I don't think the guy checked the number at all - he just looked at the photo/name of Mr Hongkonger in his passport and knew that it was the right person

agreed. I put the wrong passport number on my ticket, was quite worried about it. Nobody ever checked for my ID.
