I am travelling to India with my husband to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. We fly from London, arriving in the morning of Thursday 26th May around 11am and would love to board a train that evening / night to go to Kochi, where we'd like to spend 4 or 5 days, before returning to Delhi, by plane, on Thursday 2nd June.

I have tried to find a train leaving Delhi on a Thursday late afternoon / evening - so that we dont have to spend our 1st night in Delhi when we'd rather be off on our train journey south

it seems there isnt a direct train leaving Delhi on Thursdays, except for a morning train which we would arrive too late to get

are there any other ways of getting a train and changing somewhere, without using up too much time?

also - it would be better if we arrived in Kochi at a civilised hour

any help greatly appreciated - even if I am asking the impossible I would prefer to know and then change our schedule..

our dates are not really flexible as I am a teacher and have to work around school holidays

and we need to travel to + from England via Delhi

thank you

Delhi-Kochi direct doesn't really work with your timings, Ernakulam is the station you need for Kochi.

Have a look at the following options

Delhi-Mumbai and Mumbai-Ernakulam

On those pages, first click 'Travel' on the 3rd line near the centre of the page, this will bring the fastest trains to the top, then move along and click on thursday (Delhi-Mumbai) and Friday (Mumbai-Ernakulam)

The 2 trains to look at for Delhi-Mumbai are the Mumbai Rajdhani (12952) and the Garib Rath (12910)

The 2 trains to look for from Mumbai to Ernakulam are the Garib Rath (12201) and the Netravati (16345)

On such a short holiday, saving money may not seem your number 1 aim, but the fares for the Garib Rath trains in 3-tier air con are fantastic value

Rs1360 instead of Rs2673, and you'll have to take my word here, there's not a lot of difference

Do you specifically want to travel by train on that journey

If I were doing it I would fly from Delhi to Kochi or perhaps fly Delhi - Mangalore and then take the train from Mangalore to Kochi. The only reason to do the entire journey by train is if you really love train journeys

I just did Mumbai - Kochi by Netravati Express in August 2010 which is perhaps the best time to do this journey,

Old Harbor Hotel in Fort Kochi is fantastic albeit pricy
