Only travelling part of journey for a ticket I've booked... is this ok?

Hi everyone.
I’m about to embark upon my first trip to India. I think I have managed to suss out the train booking system and I’ve organised all of our major journeys. I’ve booked a train from Agra to Jaipur on 11th April, however, I am now going to go from Agra to Bharatpur the day before to go to Keoladeo NP, probably on a local bus since all the trains between here are now waitlisted as I’ve left it a bit late to arrange another train. So, I was planning on leaving the original booking in place, but rather than go back to Agra from Bharatpur to get on the train can I get on it at Bharatpur as it does stop there. Or will the station attendants have seen at Agra that we are not in our seats and given them to someone else?!!! Hope this makes sense!
I'm afriad to cancel the ticket and try and book another one as they are onto waitlist number umpteen so I probably won't get on.
Thanks.
Essie

Your boarding point does matter. So in case you do not board the train at the designated boarding point , reservation is not valid any more. Change the boarding point.

Hi Essie and welcome to IndiaMike. :)

I've read this question before on here, and yes there is a way to sort it to make sure nobody gets your seat, I think you have to go in person to sort it out beforehand, but I can't really remember. The good news is that we have really helpful members on here who do know all about this stuff and will no doubt be along to tell you the procedure in detail.

Meanwhile, definitely don't cancel your ticket!

Hi!
Thank you for advice, I definitely won't be cancelling the ticket! All my routes are now waitlisted up to about 50+ so I'm so glad I booked them all weeks ago!
If it comes to it I can get the bus back to Agra to get on the train there as I have loads of time, but would prefer not to double back on myself if poss.
Can anyone tell me how to change the boarding point? Is it possible to do this on IRCTC website? I've had a look but can't work out how to do it.
Thanks again.

You can change the boarding point from Agra to Bharatpur, but you need to do this at least 24 hours in advance. You can goto th reservation office in Agra and do this... shouldn't take long.

ok, well I arrive in Agra a couple of days before so I can sort it then.
Thanks everyone for your help! This forum is a goldmine! Wish I'd found it weeks ago.
