I was just trying to book an evening train from Trivandrum to Varkala. I know i should probably have no trouble getting a train on the day but i wanted to just pick my train and time and get it out of the way. I have been doing all my bookings through Cleartrip and so far no problems, until today. Upon picking my train and class etc i clicked to book the train and was informed i have used up my bookings for the calendar month this railway regulations. This is not a huge problem for me but i just thought if anyone is travelling even more than i am then this is a problem.

I know IRCTC has that limitation of 6 tickets in a month, but never knew Cleartrip has as well. May be geared towards preventing agents using this service.

Anyways, Thanks for putting this up. Would be a point to note for many.

It's a good reminder yes; I knew there's a limit (wasn't sure if it applied to e.g. Cleartrip as well, as apparently confirmed now), but can never remember the exact numbers.

Mentioning it to someone else recently who were looking for a bulk booking btw, it struck me that I think you can book a given number of persons per each ticket. (Probably five or so.)

So traveling in groups, you'd now be looking at that X nr. of bookings per month, x that Z nr. of people. If I am not mistaken. This naturally only applies to where you're looking to travel in pairs or in groups, on the same rides.

This is from IRCTC:

"A maximum of six berths/seats can be booked at a time for a specified journey between any two stations served by the train subject to distance restrictions in force.
An individual user can book a maximum of ten tickets in a calendar month."

dear traveller,
it is a rule set by the indian railways to control misuse by certain people who sell tickets at higher rates to the needy ones. so you can be sure that its not only you.

Actually i'm still a bit confused. All the train journeys i have booked so far are for travel in January. So does this rule say i can't buy anymore tickets for train journeys in January?

What the rule means is that in the month of October you can book only 10 tickets online. If you need to book more tickets and if you have a partner, ask your partner to create an Id and book the additional tickets.

Maybe this is a stupid question... but if you make one booking for 2 people does it count as one booking or two?

Funny, this happened to me yesterday (Oct 31). The message I got on the IRCTC website said:

"You have reached the maximum of 10 transactions in a month.

This would mean that even a cancellation (which I have done in Oct) is considered a transaction.

Today is Nov 1, so I can book again!

Cheers

Nattusbs

PS: Yes, I think it is to prevent agents from booking and re-selling.
