If you're asking "can you upgrade your train ticket reservation online?" then no. You can refund your tickets & buy new ones. Or, you can ask the TT at the time of departure if any better seats are available and pay the difference.

As to why, that is up to Indian rail, but I assume most people buy the ticket they want the first time around. Dealing with the few who want to upgrade isn't worth the trouble.

Good assumption. Thanks.

There is an option in IRCTC which states 'Consider for Auto Upgradation'.

If you want this option click on the check box.

Just to clarify. The 'Consider for Auto Upgradation' option is for the railways to upgrade you IF they have vacant seats in higher classes. It is totally dependent on vacant berths being available un-utilised till the last moment and the persons selected are at Random. This selection is done during charting.

If seats are available, you too can approach the TTE to upgrade you. You will be charged the difference in fare.
