Finally the itinerary for our trip is nearly complete.. now it's time to book!

We need to go from Agra - Varanassi on the 13th Nov (2 people ).

There are not many options and low availability on the Direct train but there are many more which do the Tundla - Mughal Sarai route, both about 15-20km away from respective towns I want to go from.

1: How do we get to Tundla from Agra, and to Varanasi from Mughal Sarai?

2: Does anyone know the "nicest route" We could leave mid-day / early afternoon but means arriving in Mughal Sarai late eve / midnight. Can we get to Varanasi at this time? Maybe and overnight train is better..

3: Should we just take the Marudhar Express/4854 12hr 15min direct? Waitlist #5 for 2AC, Available for 3AC. Should I go for 2AC as long journey?

4: I've just found the Sealdah Express/2986 AF-Mughal, good departure location time but arrives at 2.40am in Mughal Sarai! Anyone ever taken this?

5: The below is one option for Tundla - Mughal Sarai, looks good, any opinions?

Poorva Express/2304 8 hrs 5 min
577 km
3 halts Departs @ 08:35PM
Sun,Wed,Thu,Sat
(On Avg: Departs 3 min late)
Tundla Junction/TDL
(22 km from Agra Fort) Arrives @ 04:40AM +1 night
Mon,Thu,Fri,Sun
(On Avg: Arrives 29 min late)
Mughal Sarai Junction/MGS
(16 km from Varanasi Junction)

Thanks in advance...

Tom

A couple of suggestions.

Try booking Idgah Agra to Varanasi Jn if you can;t find availability from Agra Fort.

An Agra-Varanasi train will always be better than a Tundla-Varanasi or Agra-Mughal Sarai or even worse, a Tundla-MGS train.

Don't get to Mughal Sarai late at night.

thanks Steven, yes tried Idgah Agra and it does have shorter 2AC waitlist (WL1 rather than WL5), I think will just take 3AC anyway to get it confirmed, you say upper berths are best? Is it worth going from Idgah Agra rather than Agra Fort anyway.. Will we avoid a rush etc?? better station?

Depends where your hotel is, but Agra Fort should alwaya be better, the trains call at Idgah Agra, then Agra Fort, and they stay at Agra Fort for at least 20 minutes, so no rushing to find your carriage/berth (tip, Air con carriages have no bars on the windows, so it's easy to look down the length of the train and see where the air con carriages are).

Be relaxed at the stations in Agra, it really frustrates the opportunist theives.
