Bairabi-Sairang Rly will not be ready by 2014, says Lalthanhawla

http://www.mizonews.net/mizoramnews/...-lalthanhawla/

Mizoram Chief Minister and President of Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) Lalthanhawla said that the Bairabi-Sairang rail link will not be completed by 2014.

“Although it is has been planned, it is very unlikely that the construction of Bairabi-Sairang Railway will be completed by 2014. This is because of the selfish people who expect huge compensation; there is problem in executing the work,” Lalthanhawla said.

From Bandra to Jogeshwari, rail corridor may run underground

http://articles.timesofindia.indiati...urchgate-virar

A major hurdle in the implementation of the ambitious Churchgate-Virar elevated rail corridor project may finally get cleared.

The railway authorities have decided to rework the alignment of the corridor between Bandra and Jogeshwari to avoid relocation of scores of residential and commercial structures. As per the new proposed design, the corridor on this 8.5 km stretch will entirely run underground.

In the original design, only an 8.04 km section between Oval Maidan and Mahalaxmi was to be underground. The corridor was to be at grade, or alongside the existing tracks, from Santa Cruz to Vile Parle, from Dahisar to Mira Road, Bhayander to Vasai, and at Virar. The remaining 42 km of the 63-km corridor was to be elevated.

On Saturday, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and railway board chairman Vinay Mittal reviewed the status of the Rs 21,000 crore project. During the meeting, sources said, the reworked alignment was discussed. "It has been decided to go underground between Bandra and Jogeshwari," a railway official said. "This will save relocation of about 100 structures."

The state government, which is assisting the railways in the project's implementation, had sought the alignment's revision after a review last month. The original design of the project required rehabilitation of more than 1,700 families or 7,000 people.

During the meet, sources said, Mittal urged Chavan to expedite the process of signing the state support agreement (SSA). The Western Railway wants the state's help in acquisition of land for the project, relief and rehabilitation work, shifting of utilities, maintenance of law and order during construction, development of concourse area and fixing the FSI for commercial development of stations.

Dindigul-Palani BG section to be opened for traffic soon

http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper...cle3976371.ece

The much-awaited Dindigul-Palani broad gauge section will be opened for passenger traffic shortly as the Southern Railway started conducting trail runs on the newly converted broad gauge line here on Sunday.

To begin with, a loco engine was driven at a very slow speed from Dindigul to Palani this morning. The technical crew comprising Chief Loco Inspector Thiagarajan, Executive Engineer (construction) Boopathy and Traffic Engineer Nadimuthu, travelled in the loco checking the track condition using various parameters. The loco engine returned from Palani at good speed to check its strength and stability levels.

After this slow trial, a special team will conduct another trial with engine and coaches on the same stretch. In the final trial run, engine and coaches will run at 120 km per hour speed to check strength of the track and other parameters including safety of passengers.

Led by Railway Deputy Chief Engineer D.K. Singh, a special safety team, mostly track inspection engineers, from Chennai is expected to conduct another trial run using loco engine with minimum number of coaches on October 9 to check the track using sophisticated equipment fitted in one of the compartments.

Rlys develops new system to prevent train accident

http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/...cle3978850.ece

Strengthening the safety infrastructure, the Railways has developed a new system to prevent train accidents.

The new system — Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) — is a fusion of Train Protection Warning System (TPWS) and Anti-Collision Device (ACD).

“Automatic braking system will be applied if two trains come closer on a same track with the TCAS in force,” said Vinay Mittal, Chairman, Railway Board.

TPWS and ACD are already operational on a trial basis on selected routes. As a pilot project, TPWS has been provided on Chennai suburban section and another pilot project is in progress on Nizamuddin—Agra section.

TPWS is also being provided on Dum Dum—New Garia section of Kolkata Metro.

As far as ACD, developed by Konkan Railway, is concerned, the system is operational as a pilot project on 1736 km in Northeast Frontier Railway.

“However, ACD witnessed operational problems in Southern Railway. So it can be extended only after resolving those problems,” Mittal said.

Shatabdi, Rajdhani set to become faster

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/sh...aster/1013849/

In a bid to reduce travel time of train journeys, the Railways will induct Electrical Multiple Units (EMU) train sets for all Shatabdi and Rajdhani services. This will increase the speed of these trains to 160 kmph from 90 kmph. The proposed train set will have 21 coaches and with its distributed power arrangement, it is touted to be highly power efficient. Each EMU set will cost the Railways Rs 200 crore.

“The existing locomotive-hauled trains has speed constraints due to poor acceleration and deceleration capabilities. The proposed modern distributed powered EMU train sets will be free from these bottlenecks and will substantially reduce run-time,” said a senior railway official.
