It's not clear what you mean when you say you "must" take a train to one or the other. A train to either one will get you to Varanasi. More trains from New Jalpaiguri stop at Mughal Sarai than at Varanasi Junction, and those that do stop there don't run every day so you have more choices if you go to Mughal Sarai..

You can compare the schedules on the Indian Railways website at www.indianrail.gov.in If you click on "Trains between important stations" and fool around with it you can see which trains go to which stations and also compare the schedules of the various trains - total duration of the journey, how many stops, arrival and departure from each station -- and also which classes are available on each train. According to the schedule, two of the trains that stop at Varanasi Jn also stop at Mughal Sarai anyway, but the other two don't. I not sure it really makes a difference which station you stop at because one way or the other you'll still be in Varanasi!

actually, mughal sarai is not in varanasi. it is on the other side of the river, if memory serves, about 20 km from varanasi. that is how i went, which i found quite nice, crossing via rikshaw on a small pontoon bridge into varanasi during sunset. what a beautiful sight and i think a much better introduction to varanasi then coming from varanasi jnct. and going through the city.

Query on resertving 1A

First, let me say I am most grateful for the help so far.
I have determined that #2423 Ghy Rajdhani is my best choice New Jalpaiguri to Mughal Sarai (much as it arrives at 1 in the morning!).
I will not be going until Nov 1 and, as I understand it, cannot book on the internet until 60 days before. Still, when I look now at that train availability and scan many weeks iA seats are never available. One explanation, I suppose, might be that it fills in Guwahati and there are no seats left in New Jalpaiguri. It still seems strange. Can you help with an explanation or advice on how to book 1A for Wednesday Nov. 1?
Many thanks again.

Personally, I wouldn't want to arrive at Mughalsarai at 1am and try to get to my hotel. It is a fair way from there to the city and I guess that's where you intend to stay. Some areas require you to walk through narrow alleyways - probably not the best in the middle of the night when you're not familiar with where you're going!

Are you sure you want to go 1A? It's a very expensive option. 2A is perfectly fine (we are 50+ and don't slum it) with just 4 berths to a compartment and fully curtained compartments. Price is nroughly half that of 1A.

Steve Ber has previously advised me to cross Bihar at night as there is less chance of delays thanks to unscheduled stops. It worked well for us. I would suggest you consider the 2505 NE Express; get a good night's sleep and arrive at a reasonable time. Don't forget that if the 2423 is delayed you could arrive at 3am instead.

The lack of 1A may be to do with the fact that the train originates in Dibrugarh as the 2423A with no 1A; extra bogies are attached in Guwahati.

Hi,

I also think the Mikewill has got some valid point, if you are trying to get into a hotel at 1:30 in the morning, reconsider. Else if you are planning to wait out station itself for the next connecting train, thats OK. Just make sure to proceed immediately to Platform no. 1 on alighting. There you will find the waiting room, police (maybe!) and it won't be deserted as other platforms. Only when the anouncement for you next train has been made you should go to the designated platform.

About the issue of not getting a reservation in 1A, the Guwahati-Delhi sector has fewer train than the demand, hence you will always find all seats booked. Though, its not that all the tickets were booked from Guwahati. There is quota allotted from every station, so when you are booking from NJP you will get seats that were allotted for NJP quota. You should try to book the ticket as soon the bookings open, i.e. 60 days prior.

I heartily agree with the two previous posts about considering the NE Express and going 2AC rather than 1AC!

Dear dkurland,

Your observation:-
".I have determined that #2423 Ghy Rajdhani is my best choice New Jalpaiguri to Mughal Sarai (much as it arrives at 1 in the morning!)."

@@@Passengers are NOT booked by 2423 for journey between New Jalpaiguri and Mughalsarai.
------
@@@In all Rajadhanis, a passenger CANNOT book a Ticket from one Intermediate Station to another Intermediate Station.
