I wonder if any of you train gurus can get with those who know Mcleod Ganj (sp?) and tell me if a bummer of a situation can be made right...

Our reservations for bikes here in Jaipur just fell through, a mess of a story I should expound upon later . We were going to spend my buddy's last 5 days in country traveling east from here through the bird sanctuary and on to Agra and the Taj before his train from here to Mumbai on the 15th. No bikes equals us splitting up, him on his own, my girl and me (hopefully) up to Dharamsala, then back to Dehli for a 20 Dec departure for Bangkok. I'm wondering how best to do it and whether it would be worth it in the first place. Whatcha think? Thanks for the help.

Take the overnight train from Delhi on 15th and you will be in Dharamsala the next day. You can spend 4 nights there and reach Delhi on 19th.

Four nights in McCleod Ganj is more than enough... it's a circus, with little in the way of real Indian culture to occupy you, and you will probably get bored quickly. I would go as far as to suggest that it's not worth the journey from Delhi (but there are, of course, other opinions).

Thanks MS, that's basicly what I was afraid of. Still, I'm ready to get the hell out of Jaipur and just a peek at the Himalaya is what I'm wanting for our short time remaining. What would be a better course of action I wonder?

Well my favourite place near Shimla but away from the crowds is Chail. Former Maharaja's palace has been converted in to a very nice hotel with awsome view and quiet walks thru pine forests.
Another quiet place with beautiful walks and perfect solitude is Kasauli.
From Haridwar you can take refuge at the near by reserve fores Chilla, there is a nice lodge there

Jyo, great suggestions; just what we were hoping for. I'll dig my nose into some research, let you know what we come up with and will likely pester you for more details. Again, thanks.

Fastest & comfortable way :
Jaipur - Delhi = Volvo Bus
(from jaipur bas stand - Sindhi Camp -)
or even the morning train is equally good.

Delhi - Mcleoadganj & back = Volvo Bus
(from ISBT Kashmiri Gate leaves around 730 pm everyday)

Good Rides/Hikes in Rishikesh?

Thanks Amit, Jyo and Mickey for all of the suggestions. While kicking around ideas this morning some folks overheard and strongly suggested Rishikesh. Though "undiscovered" ain't the word for the place (from what I've found today) it does sound like a good stepping off point for places that may just fit that bill. Today I've booked train passage for tonight through Delhi and up to Handiwar. Besides the spontinaety of the whole thing, what's got me most excited is the Bullet I've already reserved for the day after tomorrow. So all of your suggestions Jyo now become possible for us. Thanks again.

With that, does anyone know of incredible rides leading to incredible hikes around Rishikesh?

Both these places are short journey from Rishikesh and lots and lots of buses in this route.
