Hi There

Can anyone please help me? I am looking for a train (or fastest alternative form of transport) from New Delhi (NDLS) to Agra (AGC)on the 9th October any time after 12 midday. (The shorter the travel time, the better)

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

I am researching this for my boss - so the better the information, the bigger pat on the back i get!

Thanks

Amy

Hello Amy

Indian Railways has the ability to make you look a complete idiot, even experienced India travelers get very confused at times.

The problem with Delhi - Agra is the distance, it's such a short run in India, think of the East Coast mainline in England, the company selling tickets for the London-Aberdeen train would never allow many tickets to be sold to London-Stevenage passengers because they'd lose out if London-Aberdeen passengers couldn't get reservations.

In India, they have a 'waitlist' system, after all the confirmed tickets have been sold, they start a waitlist, and as confirmed ticket holders cancel tickets, a waitlisted ticket holder moves up the waitlist and sometimes moves to confirmed status.

Because the number of tickets on the Delhi-Agra sector are limited, a waitlisted ticket (WL/04 for example) has very little chance of becoming a confirmed ticket, as there may be as few as 4-10 seats/berths used, so the percentage of cancellations needed is too high to take the risk.

So a confirmed seat/berth is required.

Another problem, many trains on the Delhi-Agra sector actually start their journey north of Delhi, and can sometimes get delayed before they get to Delhi, and you know your boss would somehow work out that this is your fault, that's just the way they are.

So considering all the above, I think you should go for the following train.

Train 2191 departs New Delhi station daily at 14:05 and gets to Agra Cant station at 17:10

This train starts it's journey at New Delhi, and although there are other trains closer to 12, they start their journeys north of Delhi and already have waitlists.

Book train 2191 from New Delhi (station code NDLS) to Agra Cant (AGC) for the 9th October, there are confirmed tickets available in every class.

Book in First Class air con (1A) if he's a snob, or if maximum brownie points are needed, it costs £11, but this class isn't needed for such a short journey, 2-tier air con (2A) is £7, but has more talkative people and is very comfortable and better value for money.

3 tier air con (3A) is £5, comfortable with more Indian families.

Sleeper Class (SL) is £2 and is still my favorite class, the people in Sleeper Class are more like the working class people in England, and they'll be fascinated by your boss, Sleeper Class doesn't have the slightly darkened windows that sometimes spoil an air con class journey, but your boss would need a sense of adventure and a sense of humor, but if he has these things, he'd get more out of Sleeper Class than any other class.

I've done a long thread (with photos) about Sleeper Class, click on the 'Train Information' link below to find it.

If you won the lottery last night, tell him to buy a 2nd class unreserved ticket (about 40p) when he gets to New Delhi station, he'll think of you a lot when he's in that unreserved carriage.

You'll need to book a ticket now, and I've been reading about lots of problems regarding booking on the official website, so I suggest you book via http://www.cleartrip.com/trains

Cleartrip charges a small booking fee, but many people find it an easier way to book tickets.

How is your boss getting back from Agra?

If he's going back to Delhi, you have to be very careful about what train to book, as most of the trains start their journey a long way before Agra, often over 24 hours earlier, so delays can and do happen.
