Just found the following page with links to all sorts of info.

http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/vie...,1,304,366,554

I found the following info on passenger numbers and earnings per class, I don't know if this info has been freely available on the net in the past, but it's the first time I've noticed it, and it makes interesting reading.

Sleeper class SL made Rs. 6427 Crores, which is the same amount as all other remaining classes combined, 1A + 2A + 3A + CC + FC, Rs. 6346 Crores.

Interesting

Here's a very quick calculation. the first number is how much on average IR made from each passenger in that class, the 2nd number uses the first number and multiplies it by the number of berths in a carriage, so gives a reasonable estimate as to how much money is taken for a full carriage.

1A = 1,353.0 = 24,353

2A = 926.4 = 42,614

3A = 828.62 = 53,032

FC = 387.2 = 10,067

SL = 296.2 = 21,330

1A/2A combi carriage = 16,236 + 18,528 = 34,764

I must point out though, I could give you a dozen reasons why the final figures are not totally accurate, the main ones being Tatkal charges, RAC passengers, higher fares for the Rajdhani trains, and higher number of berths in LHB rakes, but the numbers still give a reasonable idea of the income per carriage.

In the end, the efficiency of engines are critical component. As we say in the airline world, if the plane is on the ground, it is not making money. If it is in the air, it is making money (or losing )

Low Engine usage is the key.
