You will get general ticket only at the station whether going anywhere but for Tatkal reservation you can use the station counter or online reservation. But I will prefer reservation as you will get a booked sit. Tatkal ticket starts 2 days before your journey date. So if you have much time get your reserved ticket.
Use GPS while you travel.......:)

You can't buy a General ticket that way.

Ask the TTE of the train you are travelling on to give you an Extension ticket. You will be charged for the difference between A'bad-Valsad and A'bad-Surat that you have already paid.

Also concessional fare (Like Senior Citizen / Telescopic Fare) would not come into picture.

vishalmote, just go a bit early. that is the only way you can get a ticket. and if you are within half-an-hour of your train departure, ask the people in the Q nicely, sometimes they will let you go ahead. There is no limit generally for the number of general tickets sold, so you are pretty much assured one. finding a place to sit/lie down/stand is another matter all together.
you can only go in the general compartment, unless you find a Ticket Examiner and make some arrangements. It is rare to get a berth, if both the regular and waitlists are full.

General Travel Tickets for travel by General Class can be bought 3 days in advance of travel. Just mention the travel date when asking for the ticket.

When I tried to buy general tickets for the following day in Phalodi, Rajasthan in February 2013 I was told that I would have to return 30 minutes before the train was due.

I did and had no problem.

Dave: The only restriction(s) are that the journey should be over 200 km for ticket to be issued upto 3 days before travel, else the ticket will only be issued on the day of travel.

This is only applicable to counters running the UTS (Unreserved Ticketing System). For manual card type tickets, one can only buy half hour before travel.

That explains it. Our trip to Jaisalmer was less than 200kms.

One further needs to specify the name of the train. One may opt to buy Mail/Express or Superfast Unreserved Ticket but that is not the end of all the problems. A clerk usually issues ticket for the next train scheduled to depart. However, you are planning to board the next train which however may be Superfast or Mail/Express like the previous one but takes a longer route.
You board the train and you get penalized.
