Hi there,
i have tried now for almost a week to book a train ticket from Agra to Varanasi. It seems virtually impossible. I sent an email to the IRCTC and called them and they have been no help. I can't seem to book a ticket without an indian mobile number and address and of course i don't have one. i also tried to log into my account and i keep getting an error, when i sent an email asking to reset my password they gave me a new one and when i log in it doesn't work. all i want to do is book 2 train tickets but it seems like nothing is simple in india.

can someone please help me with this, i leave in 2 weeks and still have no tickets. how do i book these tickets??

Unless something has changed very recently you will not be able to use a non-Indian credit or debit card on makemytrip.

goindia - You need to have an AMEX card to book with IRCTC from outside India. Look at this thread. You need to read it all the way through as the situation has been developing over the last few months.

If you want to use Visa or Mastercard you will need to register through Cleartrip which makes things a little more complicated.

Trains from Agra - Varanasi tend to book up early. Have you checked that there are actually berths available for the dates thhat you want? If not there are alternative options such as travelling from Tundla - 20km outside Agra.

Hi Dave W - I'm just embarking on setting up my Cleartrip/IRCTC accounts. I fly out to Nepal in 2 weeks and want to get trains for India in June booked before I go.
Is it worth trying to get IRCTC and Cleartrip linked at this stage or would it be much better to beg someone to lend me their AMEX and book directly with IRCTC? If I went with this option is it fairly straight forward or still a pain in the bum??!

Thank you!

2 weeks! Best of luck. When you have done your online application you may need to chase IRCTC up over the phone.

I have used both IRCTC direct and Cleartrip (but not since the need to synch the accounts). My guess would be that there is a shorter process, therefore less room for things to go wrong using IRCTC directly with AMEX. You need to ensure that AMEX are aware that the card is going to be used for an out of UK transaction.

One advantage of IRCTC over Cleartrip is that they actually list all of the available trains.

Thanks Dave - Would have started a lot earlier if I'd realised what a nightmare train bookings are. Will post update on the train thread to let you know if I manage to get anything booked before I go!

goog luck with booking your tickets. i've tried now for almost a week and it's been a nightmare. i have FINALLY been able to set up my IRCTC account after calling and emailing them several times to tell them that i do not have an indian mobile number....after 5 days they sent me a mobile notification number via email. now i can log in to the irctc but the site is slow, i get errors, my amex doesn't seem to be going through and it's virtually impossible to book these tickets. i have a cleartrip account but for some reason it doesn't seem to be linked to my irctc account and when i link them it asks me for a mobile verification id and it won't accept the original one that i was sent via email. i emailed irctc about this and they gave me some answer that didn't address the problem at all so now i feel like i am back at square one.....so i am as a loss.

That's pretty normal, particularly at peak usage times (8 a.m to 10 a.m. IST) The system shuts down for at least an hour at 23.30 IST each night.

Have you notified your AMEX provider that you are going to be using your card on a foreign site? You may be up against their fraud prevention measures.

Sounds like you are in a similar situation to me goindia.

My boyfriend followed the advise on Seat61.com for booking with Cleartrip (by setting up both Cleartrip and IRCTC and trying to link them) but that hasn't worked. IRCTC emailed through the SMS code within 36 hours no problem (after emailing copy of passport) but Cleartrip doesn't acknowledge that he has a IRCTC account. Also his details do not work if trying to log on directly at IRCTC.

We've now decided to set up a new account not using Cleartrip at all but directly with IRCTC - waiting for the mobile code then hoping to book that way - although as you say it will no doubt be slow going!

Have you informed Amex you care using your card on an Indian website??

That doesn't sound like it is something wrong at your end but that doesn't help you very much. It might be a temporary problem as others have reported success with Amex on IRCTC quite recently on other threads.

You might need to start work on a back up plan such as FTQ tickets or buses. How many trips do you need to book?
