We'll be returning from Hampi on Dec 22/23 on the overnight express train. It is scheduled to get into Banglore after 6 a.m. The only early morning train I could find going from Bangalore to Mysore leaves at 7 a.m. (Well, there are earlier ones but no later ones.) Although in an ideal world, that schedule would work, I realize it might not happen so seamlessly. A couple of questions: Should I book the train to Mysore and just pray we make it? Should we not book the train to Mysore and if we happen to make it, just buy the tickets right there? It doesn't seem like there's another train to Mysore until 8 o'clock that night. Is that true? If we miss the 7 a.m. train will we have to wait all day in Bangalore?

Many thanks,

Emelle

There are several trains from Bangalore to Mysore during the day.
http://erail.in?T=SBC::MYS:

There are trains at 7:30am, 11am, 3pm.
The 11am Shatabdi express will be a nice experience and only takes 2 hours. You may have a long wait though for it.
Most likely you will catch the 7AM train. It also comes a long way.
If you don't want to take any risk, book the 11am Shatabdi.

There are also regular buses from Bangalore to Mysore.

In all probability you can catch the 7AM train (I've travelled Hampi-BLR and everytime, the train has reached ontime). The next train, the one at 7:30PM is a passenger train(slow moving, stops at all the stations enroute) and will not have reserved coaches and I do not recommend it. If you miss the 7AM train, one option is to wait for the non-stop train at 11AM (doesn't run on Wed), the other option is to take a non-stop bus.

The bus station is right opposite BLR railway station. There are regular (once in 15mins) non-stop buses running to Mysore through the day, including A/c Volvo and Benz buses that are extremely comfortable. Bangalore-Mysore is extremely well connected by buses and its no worry at all.

Hi,

My guess is that you have an almost 100% chance of not making that 7am train.
Even if a miracle happens and your train from Hampi does arrive on time, you'll still be fretting about whether or not you'll make it through the whole journey.

The safest bet would be that 11am Shatabdi.
If you need to kill some time in Bangalore while you wait, perhaps visit Lalbagh botanical gardens, which is not too far from station and very pleasant.
Or maybe get some breakfast at a hotel?

Dear Emelle,

##Please look at this:
-----------------------------
6591 HAMPI EXPRESS 20/09/2010 HUBLI JN
MON TUE WED THU FRI SAT SUN
SNo Stn Code Stn Name Route No. Arrival Time Dep. Time Halt Time (In Minutes) Distance Day Remark
1 UBL HUBLI JN 1 Source 17:45 0 1
21 BNC BANGALORE CANT 1 05:27 05:32 5:00 563 2
22 SBC BANGALORE CY JN 1 06:10 Destination 567 2
......................

##The 6591 Hampi Express had been assigned a running time of 38minutes for the last 4 Kms. By and large, 6591 will always be on time.

##Now, please look at this:
--------------------
6731 MYSORE EXP 20/09/2010 TUTICORIN
MON TUE WED THU FRI SAT SUN
SNo Stn Code Stn Name Route No. Arrival Time Dep. Time Halt Time (In Minutes) Distance Day Remark
1 TN TUTICORIN 1 Source 16:35 0 1
25 BNCE BANGALORE EAST 1 05:31 05:33 2:00 638 2
26 BNC BANGALORE CANT 1 05:38 05:43 5:00 641 2
27 SBC BANGALORE CY JN 1 06:40 07:00 20:00 645 2
================

##Please note that 6591 and 6731 (**the train that has to take you to Mysore from Bangalore) have common path between Bangalore East and Bangalore City.

##Also, please note that 6731 Express had been assigned a running time of 57 Minutes for the last 4 Kms., unlike your Hampi.

##Unless some untoward & unexpected incident happens, 6591 will always arrive in Bangalore City much much ahead of 6731 Mysore Express.

##The only problem is 6591 will get admitted on PF.3 or PF.4 or PF.5, where as 6731 can be admitted only on PF.5 or PF.6 or PF.7.
Out of this PF.5 and PF.6 is an Island Platform. So, if Hampi comes on PF.5, then 6731 would certainly take PF.6, in the event of which, asbolutely there will NOT be any problem for you to move from Hampi to Mysore Express.

##Even if Hampi is admitted on PF.4, you can use FOB and then climb down to PF.5/PF.6. [PF.4 is not connected to Subway. Hence climbing the FOB cannot be avoided.

##If you are still apprehensive about the 'transfer' from 6591 to 6731, then make one more reservation in the First Class (**non-AC) of 214 Mysore Passenger. Please have a look at this:
-----------
28 SBC BANGALORE CY JN 1 07:10 07:30 20:00 337 2

37 PANP PANDAVAPURA 1 09:49 09:50 1:00 456 2
38 S SHRIRANGAPATNA 1 09:57 09:58 1:00 461 2
39 NHY NAGANAHALLI 1 10:07 10:08 1:00 467 2
40 MYS MYSORE JN 1 10:45 11:10 25:00 475 2
----------------------------

##Instead of going out of the Station and hanging out for Buses which might also take around 3 Hrs., I suggest you travel either by 6731 or 214 to Mysore.

I'm a little unclear what FOB means. ARe you saying that the potential arrival points could be quite far apart?

Also, are you also suggesting that I make 2 reservations--both on the 6731 and 214?

If I make a reservation and miss the train, do I lose my full amount of the ticket? There are 6 of us so that could add up.

Thanks again for all of your suggestions---conflicting though they be!!

##If you miss the train, you will have to forego 50% of the amount paid by you.

##At the outset, I must thank you for stating that you are 6 Passengers. Hence, I suggest, you make your reservation in the FC Coach (or) Sleeper Class Coach of 214 Mysore Passenger, whose scheduled departure is 7.30hrs. In all probability, you will NOT miss 214.

VSP2779, Thank you so much for your help and advice. You obviously know quite a bit about the Indian railway and I thank you for your willingness to help!.

Is it necessary to book either of the two train options ahead of time? (6731 or 214) Or, could we wait and just see if we have time to catch the 6731 once we get to the station? And, do the same for the 214? Or, is it better to make a choice and make a reservation?

We hope to ride many trains while we're in India and my children are very excited about the idea of sleeping on the train. This is the only time I'm really worried about making a tight connection.

Thanks again,

Emelle

##For all the above sentences, my suggestion is only one - Please Reserve Your Berths in the First Class of 214 Passengers - AT ONCE. Your children, certainly, will enjoy this journey.:-)

Again, VSP 27759, my thanks. I promise this will be my last question. For the tickets I have books so far, I have booked 2AC as the friend who is travelling with our family, said that he thought this was the best option. Do you agree?

Also, I would think for a journey like Bangalore to Mysore, it might be OK to travel in SC or 3AC. What do you think?

I will book the tickets as soon as they become available.

##For journeys involving longer duration, say, certainly, 2AC is the best. In the absence of 2AC, then, 3AC can be opted.

##But in 214 Passenger there is no 2AC or 3AC, but it has got only One non-AC First Class is available. There are many people, who like to travel in FC which is on the verge of withdrawal.

##Moreover, the Bangalore-Mysore Journey lasts for just 3 hours only. Hence, without any second thought, you please book your accomodation in FC of 214.

I've just tried to book tickets for the 7 a.m. train (going to take our chances that we'll make it!) and I get a message saying the transaction was failed because of my credit card. I go through the process again and get the same message. I phone American Express and they have frozen my credit card because of the "unusual activity" but they tell me that the first transaction went through just fine. It was only the 2nd transaction that was denied. I won't be able to view my transactions on line for 24-48 hours. I emailed IRCTC to explain what happened. Really not sure if I should try booking the tickets for a 3rd time. Not sure what I should do...is there a chance that the status will change on the IRCTC site?
