Looking forward to this BBC programme tonight!

"Guided by his Bradshaw's 1913 Handbook of Indian, Foreign and Colonial Travel, Michael Portillo travels by rail from Amritsar to Shimla. His journey takes him to some of the key sites of India's 20th century story, from the massacre in Amritsar in 1919 to the bloody events of Partition. Starting in the Sikh holy city, Michael is dazzled by the beauty of the Golden Temple. His route then takes him through the Punjab, India's breadbasket, and Le Corbusier's Chandigarh before reaching the foothills of the Himalayas, where the epic Kalka to Shimla hill railway carries him to the former summer seat of the British rulers of the Raj."

One can be certain he didn't mention James Daly and the Connaught Rangers mutiny: http://www.indiamike.com/india/india...6/#post1124082

I enjoyed the programme, nice to see the places I like, places I have visited, on the television. It will be interesting to see where he goes on his next Indian train trip...

So we have the first two programes, any guesses for the last two ?
My starter for ten is the Himalayan mountain railway .
Without doubt the most incredible railway journey I have ever taken .
The penultimate journey I would assume to be in the South,Ed do you have ideas ?

The format of Michael Portillo's train programmes tends to focus more on the places he visits, than the scenery from the trains. The Kalka to Shimla train was an exception, as it did show the views.

I have never taken the Darjeeling train, so that would be interesting if it is featured.

Back in 1983, we rode the steam train from Ooty down to the plains below, that was rather special. The journey was made extra interesting as halfway down we came across a film crew, filming David Lean's "Passage to India". The engines were painted black with "Chandrapore" logos. We caught a glimpse of Alec Guinness! Not sure it would be of sufficient interest for a programme these days.

The Neral to Matheran railway has some great views, or maybe he will finish by taking the train to Kanyakamari?

All good stuff, and Portillo in India allows me to annoy anyone else watching, by saying "I've been there" lots of times!

With more "digging", I came across the following:

Michael Portillo's TV series documents his rail journeys across India visiting the following locations: Amritsar to Shimla, Jodhpur to Delhi, Mysuru to Chennai and lastly Lucknow to Kolkata.

Thank you Ed for the digging.

I look forward to all the programs, particularly Mysore to Chennai as I plan to be in both places next year.

Sadly Every time I say "I've been there " my family just tell me to fuck off, which is fair if Enough if a bit demoralizing.
