I booked my train from Madgaon in Goa to Mumbai through Cleartrip. Is it possible to get on the train at the next stop (Karmali) without making changes to my ticket? This of course is perfectly fine at home, but the Indian Train System is still a bit of a mystery to me! Any info appreciated

Yes, you can.
Else you can go to the nearest PRS Counter and change the boarding point.

Yes, you can if the point of boarding is mentioned on your ticket.Without this still you can, but there is a risk. The TTE has the liberty of allocating the seat/berth to someone else if the berth is not occupied during the time af boarding. Normally they wait for some time or may be the next halting station before allocating to others.

Thanks for the replies. Yes I thought there might be some risk. Maybe I should email Cleartrip or else get it changed at the reservations office in Delhi.

I would like to share one unofficial but usual practice.
TTEs generally wait till next one station before allotting the berth to some other passenger.
A person is rich when he has money but a person is wealthy when he has time...

So do you think that I'll be ok if I am boarding one station after the one I have booked?

As long as the stations are close together and not too long after one another it is fine.

However it is always better to get the boarding point changed.
