Hey,

I am in Varanasi and leaving for Calcutta tonight. Apparently the travel desk has booked Mughal Sarai as departure station. Varanasi Junction is much closer to my hotel and the train also stops there, so I am wondering if it would be okay to get in one station early.

Which train are you boarding? I think it should be okay. To be on the safer side purchase a general ticket from Varanasi to Mughal Sarai.

12332 Himgri something, terminus is Howrah. General ticket is basically for the seating coaches in the back, right? What happens if the TTE guy comes around, do I have to pay a fine? I mean those two stations are very close to each other.

Yes, general tickets are for the seating coaches at the back. If the TTE comes around he will consider you ticket less, if you don't have a valid ticket from Varanasi. That is why I suggested to purchase general class ticket and board from Varanasi.

One reason for the tickets to be booked from Mughal Sarai could have been to beat the Quota system to ensure a confirmed seat.

Ah okay, that's very helpful. So are General Tickets usually available? Those coaches always look a bit crowded. If I get to the station and they turn me away I could just go to MGS right away.

Once you purchase the general class ticket board the coach allotted to you. Most probably it should be vacant. There is no need to board the general coach.

i wont suggest you to board general coach, as they being very crowded. instead try to book auto from varanasi to mugalsarai in case you have lot of luggage or just board any auto or any tata sumo or bolero from outside the varanasi station. they will hardly take half an hour to reach mughalsari and will charge you 30 bucks max. i mean the shared one

i will not suggest you to take general coach
