What makes you think 4 can't be right, is is usually a lot more than that?

I was sure I'd seen similarly low numbers but maybe I'm mistaken.

The foreign tourist quota can only be bought in-person (not online). Many foreigners buy tickets online out of the general quota.. Four seems about right. You can buy tickets online rather easily

Some trains just have two berths in a given class, for the foreign tourist allocation.
Some even have two on the up journey and none in the down.
The Permutations are endless,

Confusing hey.

Our train expert said FT allocation was actually rather modest and not for all trains/stations..

The Foreign Tourist (FT) quota in most trains is anything between 2 & 6 seats for AC class accomodation (2A & 3A). The 4 seats that you see IS really available and can be booked. However, bookings under FT quota cannot be done online - has to be done in person over the counter.

The bookings under FT quota open 90 days in advance (like General quota) and the availability is shown till the time of preparation of the chart (which is usually 2-3 hours before the scheduled departure of the train from the originating station.

The reason you see 4 seats for the next 30 days is that FT quota is not frequently used (since it has to be booked in person). However bookings do happen. Pl. see this:

Train Number Train Name Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Source Station Destination Station Quota Code

2461 MANDOR EXPRESS 09-02-2010 DELHI JODHPUR JN FOREIGN_TOURIST
S.No.Date (DD-MM-YYYY)Class - 2AClass -3A
1 9- 2-2010 AVAILABLE 4 AVAILABLE 4
2 10- 2-2010AVAILABLE 4 AVAILABLE 4
3 11- 2-2010AVAILABLE 4 AVAILABLE 4
4 12- 2-2010AVAILABLE 4 AVAILABLE 4
5 13- 2-2010AVAILABLE 4 AVAILABLE 4
6 14- 2-2010AVAILABLE 3 AVAILABLE 3

You would be wondering what happens if there are no bookings in FT quota? Simple, the seats get allocated to General quota at the time of charting. That's how huge waitlists get cleared.

Thank you very much you guys for all the informative feedback.

To Haylo, come to think of it, I never did see more than 4 or 6 FT quota availability. Thanks for confirming this.

To pagal30, confusing is such a mild word for the Indian Railways :-)), but you gotta admire how among the chaos, everything still 'flows'.

To Edwardseco, I like your display image :-). Thanks for clearing my follow up inquiry because some trains did not have FT availability, which made me wonder if thats really true or just a system error.

Thank you pontesnm for confirming that. I got an email from IRCTC that said that too. I was amazed that they actually replied :-)).

And to travel_lover_007, I'd hug you if I was there, for taking the time to explain all this. That really cleared things up for me. PS, I was looking at Mandore Express myself :-D.

Encashment Cerificate?

Hello everyone,

Thanks for all the info!! I just read on the indianrail website that FT tickets can be bought in Rupees against Encashment Certificates....can anyway clarify for mo how to go about doing that? Can't one simply book a ticket in Rupees without an Encashment Cert? Also, does anyone know where the International Tourist Bureau is in Ahmedabad?

Cheers!

This quota is meant for foreign tourists. So when you entered you exchanged to indian currency. Whether that happens at a money changer or at a ATM in recent times, a document that you changed money legally is required. A money changer will give you a receipt for the exchange and an ATM will also give a receipt. Thats enough.

If you book online you don't need an encashment certificate. Then again, tourist quota tickets are not available online, you'll have to get them in person.

My experience when buying tourist quota tickets is that sometimes they ask for an encashment certificate and sometimes they don't. But officially you need it when you want to pay in rupees and so it's better to have it.

In the Foreign Tourist Bureau in Delhi you can also pay in USD or GBP - then you obviously don't need an encashment certificate. I don't know about other places.

I don't remember seeing one in Ahmedabad but there should be a counter that deals with foreign tourists.
