Hello Gina

You've got about 17 days in India, you should miss Goa, you'll find much better beaches in Thailand and South East Asia.

There's a lot more to Jaisalmer than camel treks, it really is an amazing place, but it's difficult to get to, nearly always needing to go via Jodhpur (another great city).

Are you landing in Mumbai and departing from Delhi?

I would suggest the following (as you seem happy with long train journeys)

Mumbai (1 - 2 days)(Delhi would be better)

Train 4708 Bandra (Mumbai) 15:00 JODHPUR JN 09:45

Jodhpur (2 days, 1 night)

Train 4059 JODHPUR JN 06:45 JAISALMER 13:00

Jaisalmer (3 nights)

Train 4060 JAISALMER 16:00 JAIPUR 04:50

Jaipur (2 days, 1 night)

Train 2987 JAIPUR 06:10 AGRA FORT 10:15

Agra (2 days, 1 night)(include Fatehpur Sikri)

Train 4864 departs Agra Fort (Tue, Wed, Fri & Sun.) at 21:15 and gets to Varanasi at 08:15
or
Train 4854 departs Agra Fort (Mon, Thu & Sat.) at 21:15 and gets to Varanasi at 09:30

Varanasi (3 days, 2 night)

Train 2559 VARANASI JN 19:15 NEW DELHI 07:25

Delhi (2 days)

(I've done this really quickly, so you'll have to double check the days)

The main problems with the Itinerary I suggest is that there is a lot of train travel, and you'll be visiting some of the worst places in India for touts and hassle, but these places offer what India has, that no other country has, there are much quieter places, but you've only a short time in India.

Steven :I'll be in Assam in March and was hoping to be on Majuli Island for a couple of days and then take a train back to Guwahati. The nearest big town seems to be Jorhat and I've found it's station code(JT,JTTN) but I can't seem to find a train that goes from there. Now there's a town inland from there called Mariani that has a couple of trains going to Guwahati(GHY).Is that the best way to take a train from there? Even then a couple of those trains seem to have been cancelled from Guwahati to Dibrugarh(#4055,#5960).Maybe because of the political violence? Are there any train lines the other side of the river?Thank you.

I'll just check, there used to be a metre gauge line going from Kamakhya (sp)(Near Guwahati), but the metre gauge may not go all the way now, instead of going to Kamakya it may terminate at Rangiya Jn (about an hour north of Guwahati).

The metre gauge line from Kamakya/Rangiya goes along the north bank of the river, but the trains are slow.

I keep reading different stories about the whole line being closed, or being open, I'll see what I can find out.

EDIT. Rangiya is only about 40 Kms north of Guwahati.

Train 5813 (Arunachal Express) departs Rangiya Jn daily at 19:15 and gets to North Lakhimpur at 05:15.

The train has sleeper class only and this journey will cost Rs 154

There is a direct road from North Lakhimpur to Majuli Island.

I nearly traveled on this line, I planned to go up one side of the Brahmaputra and back down the other.

I got to Upper Assam (near Ledo), but got cheesed off with the constant rain and got a flight from Dibrugarh to Calcutta.

As well as Jorhat, you can get trains from Guwahati to Mariani Jn (18 Kms from Jorhat). (station code MXN)

EG.

Train 2067 (Jan Shatabdi) departs Guwahati (not sundays) at 06:30and gets to Mariani Jn at 12:30 (CC, 2S.)

There's also an overnight train (20:30 - 04:30)

God grief that was fast Steven! You know if I had called Canadian Pacific Railway locally about trains I would still have been punching buttons on a phone tree in the time it took you to respond!Actually I'm more concerned in getting back from Majuli than getting to it since on the way there I'm stopping off at Kaziranga for a few days.Knowing that Mariani is only 18 K's from Jorhat really helps and I'll find the times of a North Lakhimpur to Rangiya train.I kind of like the idea of seeing some of the North shore.

Train 5814 departs North Lakhimpur daily at 18:55 and gets to Rangiya Jn at 05:10

The trains are often late on this section.

There are loads of trains from Rangiya to Guwahati.

In case you have a problem with cancelled trains, check out Air Deccan's website, I read only a few weeks ago that there were starting a service from Lilabari airport (about 12 kms from North Lakhimpur) to Guwahati (I think), and Air Deccan do some really cheap flights.

Also see if there are any cheap flights from Jorhat.

Thanks once again! The train hours are pretty good but I'll definitely check to see if there's a new air route opened by Deccan.I had looked at Jorhat about air travel for a back up because of the regions instability and Jet Airways fles J to G twice a week but on days that weren't any good to me.Indian Airlines has a flight but it's Jorhat to Calcutta to Guwahati which is much to circuitous.Once i get to Guwahati I'm planning on going to Shillong.

There used to be a helicopter service from Guwahati to Shillong, it was about US$30 one way, I don't know if it's still operational, I'd pay the price just to go up in the air in a helicopter, unless it looked like an Indian bus.

There is still that service.I'm considering it on the way back but there's a 10K baggage limit which if it's enforced mght be a problem. Also the Lonely Planet guide called their safety record dismal.None of the other guides seem to be of that opinion though.

need to buy short journey tickets in advance?

We are planning to go by train from Kozhikode to Kannur. Short journey, good train times in the afternoon/evening. Do we need to buy tickets in advance?
We are flying into Kozhikode, then the plan is to go straight to the train station.
If we do buy the tickets in advance, what if we miss that train? Would we be able to use the tickets for the next train that comes along?
Thanks for the advice!!!

No info on me, so replying to remind myself to reply later.

I'm not great on South India, but I thought Kannur was up in the hills with no trains, I may be confusing it with somewhere else.

For 'short' journeys, just turn up at the train station, but a 2nd class ticket and get on any train in the unreserved compartment, that's what I'd do, but not what I'd advise everyone to do.

Flight arrival time?

What train (number) were you thinking of booking?

Are you happy in a crowded carriage?

I could go on with many more questions....
