Oh, I often get to be.

What else is new

(Look, to explain, I often shut up altogether. Just not wanting to deal with it anymore.

Then no sooner and when you regain your composure have you taken the effort to really explain something, and it seems to be just an open door for ever more people to crawl in. Oh, grind, grind, can we take a little more of you. You know?

So, yes, it gets one sick sometimes.)

(This is in fact exactly what made me lose my cool somewhere above. So you going to great lengths trying to explain some basics -- then no sooner have you done that but the next person jumps in, totally ignoring that (and obviously not having read even the few posts before) and going all over again so how do I get from A-X-Z, and give me some candy while I'm at it. How the bloody hell do you guys/gals think some others get around to show you the way, anyway?)

They are issued 3 days in advance as well. You have to clearly indicate the journey date, otherwise they will issue a ticket for the current date and that will not be valid if your journey date is something else.

machadinha,

Thank you for the long response yesterday.

It certainly helps to have someone who has experienced the same potential problems that I am to face, and from someone who also ideally loves to travel without fixed itineraries.

MAN I wish I was doing this back in the early 90's as you mentioned.

Another factor I have to consider is the large number of cancellations and delays due to fog, which was mentioned earlier in this thread...

*sigh*

It all leads one to believe planning an itinerary with the trains as your primary mode of transport is pretty unrecommended. Just too high a chance of significant delays.
And as you mentioned, I cant afford to be stranded for a week or more somewhere, as will have so many future connections...

One question on cancellations due to weather or other unforseen circumstances.
If a train that you have booked in advance, and had confirmed, is cancelled on the day due to fog for example, how and when is the refund credited? Or are you given a berth on another service automatically?

I have tried to find this information via all the usual Indian Railways sites but cant seem to find it.

I KNOW some of you gents would have actually experienced cancellations first hand, so if you could let me know, I would appreciate it.

p.s. Machadinha, I appreciate the efforts, dont wish to make you feel taken for granted.

Question Best Train to Amritsar

I'm changing my itinerary and I'm not sure the best order to go. I do know that I'd like to get the Agra visit done first.

Delhi - Agra - Jaipur and/or Jodhpur - Amritsar.

My question is, what is the best train (and best route) to get to Amritsar? It looks like leaving from either Agra or Delhi would be easiest. So I could possibly do that part of the trip first.

Any suggestions for best train to Amritsar?

Thanks,
SB

I think you need to submit a TDR (look around on the forum for more details), essentially you have to file a claim for a refund. I don't think it happens automatically in such cases.

Berth on another service automatically? You wish ;-)

Depends on the day you want to travel, and if you're booking in advance.

Jodhpur-Makhu has a daily, well timed train, but you need to book a couple of weeks in advance, Makhu is 2 hours (by bus) from Amritsar.

Jaipur-Amritsar has a nicely timed train on Mondays and Wednesdays, but takes a longer route on thursday and Saturdays.

The highlighted trains are direct from NJP to Varanasi...others are routed via Mughalsarai... Depending upon the date your travelling, use www.indianrail.gov.in, go to Seat Availability and push in the numbers of the trains going direct to BSB (station code for Varanasi Junction; NJP is code for New Jalpaiguri) The train numbers are shown in the highlighted portions...

I would not advise xferring at Mugalsarai...

Good luck and good wishes.

I'm surprised, and a little disapointed that I have to repeat this message so many times (at least 50 times).

You need to book NJP to Allahabad, bookings arent allowed (on the conveniently timed trains) between NJP and Varanasu/Mughal Sarai.
