Delhi to Shimla/Dharmsala?

I ultimately want to get from Delhi to Amritsar and back but would like to see some of Himachal Pradesh along the way. What's the best means of transport and where would you recommend going? I generally prefer train to bus if it's possible. Please bare in mind I'll be there in Jan/Feb. How cold will it get?

(sorry if the above has been covered a million times before. I never seem to be very efficient with the search function!)

H.P. will be extremely cold in Jan. and Feb.

From Amritsar you can take a train to Pathankot, and then a bus/Taxi to Chamba. You can visit Bharmour, Khajjiar, Dalhousie and Dharamsala, before moving on to Delhi. All travel from Pathankot onwards on the route described above is by road.

It all depends on the number of days at your disposal and also the road conditions, which are likely to be affected by snowfall.

Hi

I hired a car and driver from Jalandhar (near Amritsar) to Dharmshala and cost me 2,800 rupees (£35) for the return jouney. The drive was breathtaking accross hilly, windy roads but it did take about 6 hours, but we stopped at loads of places along the way. By the way make sure you visit Mcleodganj (Dalai Lama's residence) once in Dhramshala, though I would book a hotel Dharmshala as there a lot better there.

Do you think I should leave Himachal Pradesh for another trip? As I'm on a round-the-world adventure this time round I'm totally at a premium with regards to packing space. I really can't contemplate packing for Winter & snow! How cold will it get in Amritsar? Thanks!

Amritsar will also have night temperatures in single digit celcius, though it won't get any snow.

Hmmm .... I need to go to Amritsar though because I'm crossing into Pakistan. But then I guess Pakistan will be cold too? :-( Boo! It's too complicated! ;-) I'll just buy warm clothes in India if I have to and then leave them behind I think.
