Just a while back while watching a local TV Channel, a very interesting and reassuring report came to my notice. It is said in the Report that

The famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, popularly know as "Toy Train", would start running again from 25th of December, 2014. It also said that new railway truck has already been laid, that test drive on this new track has also been completed. Finally, clearance from Railway Safety Commissioner has also been received.

I'm not sure how true is this report. But, it will be a great news for everybody and specially for the lovers of this World heritage Railway Lines if this report turns out to be true. Let us hope for the best. Meanwhile, if anyone having latest status, may please share the same with us. Thanks.

There was a report with dateline of Posted: August 6, 2014 in the Indian Express with headline "Let’s restore Darjeeling railway (DHR), Gowda writes to Mamata".

DHR sources said restoration work had started after the warning (from UNESCO that it could lose its status as a world heritage site) but was stopped due to bad weather and labour problems in the area. North Bengal Development Minister Gautam Deb said, “We requested the central government to start restoration and allocate funds. The UNESCO team’s report said it was a highly seismic zone and the track could not be restored unless the road is rebuilt first. But the Centre did not make any effort.”

According to Narendra Mohan, Area Manager of DHR, "a pair of “jungle safari” trains runs between NJP and Gayabari while four pairs of trains run between Mahanadi and Darjeeling almost regularly. Chartered trains run on the operational track on request."

Today the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Society website is still saying

Quote:
Since mid-2010 the DHR/Hill Cart Road has been breached by a major landslip near Pagla Jhora (between Gayabari and Mahanadi). In September 2011 another major landslip breached the DHR/Hill Cart Road at Tindharia followed by a further landslip in July 2012 Near Pagla Jhora, it is expected that repairs will be completed by the end of December 2014 when a full DHR service is planned to resume.
This website is usually pretty good at keeping up with the news and has contributors who live locally. Let us keep our fingers crossed.

Confirmed news of the reopening of the complete DHR from NJP to Darjeeling would be a most welcome Christmas present.

TODAY'S UPDATE

Ananda Bazar Patrika(largest circulated Bengali daily News Paper), in a News item appeared on Page-9 of today's Paper, confirmed reopening of DHR on and from 25th Dec. This has been declared by none other than Shri Arun Kumar Sharma, the Divisional Railway Manager, Katihar Division of Northeast Frontier Railway(under whose jurisdiction DHR falls) in a meeting held on 19th December at NJP Station. As per the report, on the very first day i.e. on 25th Dec only one train would run fron NJP to Darjeeling. But from the next day onwards two sets of train (2 UP trains & 2 Down Trains) would run on regular basis. Hurray..good news, at last!!

It took the official website nearly two years to acknowledge the fact that the line was cut by the 2010 landslide.
