Hi,
I recently went to the Kalka railway station to get a ticket to New Delhi on the Kalka - New Delhi evening Shatabadi train in chair car. It was just 30 minutes before running of train and surprisingly I got a ticket even though I had not expected it, how could this be? The ticket clerk didnt even charge me the Tatkal charges, saying it was from the "current quota". Is this quote available on all trains, how to know whether there are seats available in this quota? Or is it just luck, that when there are some cancellations at last minute i.e. after 4 hour departure window, then some seats are opened for booking?

thanks in advance
Rohit

There's no current quota. All the unreserved seats that remain available after chart preparation (including un-utilized quota tickets, after adjusting for RAC/Wait-list, if any) are sold as current reservation. Some stations even have a separate counter for current reservations.

This is a short distance DAY train and as such has only sitting seats rather than berths. Also there are 2 shatabdis every day. Thats the reason there was current availability.

On most trains that are popular this is not the case, atleast for most part of the year. The availability is generally exhausted much before. But yes no harm in trying for the current availability at the major stations. But for that you should check availability just before the train departs.
