We are travelling on a sleeper train Chennai to Trivandrum leaving 1915 and arriving 1100. Can anyone tell me what to expect in the way of on-board refreshments or should we purchase food and drink before we get on.
Thanks
David

Personally...

I'd have a an early dinner, about 5.00pm maybe, and take snacks with me. I'd also take a flask of tea, as coffee ("kaapi... kaapi...") seems to be often available but chai rare on the trains I've travelled in this area.

I haven't been to Trivandrum since about 2005, but I'd expect that there will be an evening meal served. You'll have to watch out for the guy taking orders (choice may be as basic as veg/non-veg) and make sure you catch him. Vendors selling snacks may wander up and down. Take plenty of drinking water with you.

My experience based on the Alleppey train over the past few years. I don't think the Trivandrum train will be much different, except it leaves a couple of hours earlier, so you may get your dinner, if you go for ordering it, at a more civilised hour.

Hello Nick H - what a great reply thanks very much. I arrived in Chennai early this morning and might leave a trail of info on India Mike as we make
our way around.

Cheers

I'm one of the least experienced train people here --- I don't really enjoy the experience very much. But most of my train trips have been between Chennai and Kerala.

Please leave your trail of info. Wishing you a happy time

Info might be late, but could help others later...
Most of the trains from MAS to TVC starting at Chennai do not have a pantry car. Only one train starting from MS does have it. Those coming from up north are mostly likely to have a pantry car.
Nevertheless, most of the trains without pantry car are likely to be served by hawkers all the time.

Indiarailinfo (unofficial, but usually pretty accurate for this sort of thing) indicates that your train (apparently Anantapuri Express - #16723) has no pantry car. There are also no substantial stops (5+ minutes) until 2200. My guess (only a guess, as I have not ridden this train) is that evening hawkers might not be all that numerous. Best to eat before boarding and/or bring food/drink aboard. There is a 10 minute stop (Nagercoil) at 0900, so you will probably be able to get some breakfast and chai from the platform at that time.

Even TAAG does not speak about any Pantry Car in 16723.

I have been in both these trains - Ananthapuri Express and Trivandrum Mail - and, to the best of my memories, there are no pantry cars in either.
If you travel by Ananthapuri Express, I'd suggest you get your breakfast at Tirunelveli. Eating dinner at Egmore / take-away before the train departs would be advisable..
