‬I never thought of the width thing, it's never really bothered me.

Here's some measurements to prove that one of my trips had too many long train journeys.

2-tier air con

‬Lower berth = ‬length ‬185, ‬width ‬67
‬Upper berth = ‬length ‬182, ‬width ‬64

‬Distance between Lower and Upper berths = ‬83, ‬and between Upper berth and roof = ‬77+

‬Side Lower berth = ‬length ‬187, ‬width ‬55.5
‬Side Upper berth = ‬length ‬187, ‬width ‬54

‬Distance between Side Lower and Side Upper berths = ‬91, ‬and between side Upper berth and roof = ‬64+

‬As with all side berths, ‬they don't feel as long as they should, ‬that's because the length is absolute, ‬between ‬2 fixed boards, ‬if you're in the normal berths (‬not side berths)‬, ‬your toes/feet can hang over the end of the berth.

Although if your feet hang out over the end of the normal berths, people walk into them all night.

I'm 177cm tall, but I don't have my head right against the wall. The pillow would take up some of this space. Let's say there's a 10cm gap. So if my feet were absolutely vertical, they would be 5cm past the end of the 182cm upper berth. If they flop down (ie if I'm relaxed) they add at least 15 cms to my length. So there's my feet, right in the way of anyone walking through the carriage. Well, I guess short people can walk under them. But a lot of people bash into them, so if you want to actually sleep you have to lie curled up, not stretched out.

Maybe it is all a question of how big your feet are? Even on the upper berth and with my modest height of 5 feet 7 inches, I found my size forty (European) or size seven (English) feet were hanging off the end of the berth and passers-by kept bumping into them. Of course, it might be due to the fact that my very heavy daypack was serving as my pillow and forcing me to take a curious posture on the bunk. (No way I would allow anyone to steal my Bengali homework out of my pack!)

Somebody, steve?, needs to do a real time and motion study of sleepers in various berths over a long Indian train journey in order to optimize sleeping position and minimize discomforts.

If you are used to sleeping straight out, I don't think it would. For those who habitually sleep curled up, I think there is just not enough room.

I do have some apprehension about falling off a side berth! Not that I ever have.

I've got a couple of AC2 Side Upper journeys at the start of my travels, i'm 6 feet 1' so i'll sooner than later find out if i can sleep ok on the side births. The rest of my AC2 journeys are in the Upper and lower births. I'm taking my little video cam so any requests for footage of whatever, feet? compartments? sleeping people?, let me know? and nobody deny that we really are all trainspotters here on this thread

Don't do that with other people as subjects, at least without permission. Not that you are likely to get one if you ask.

My least favorite overnight berth in 2A and 3A, I miss the window too much, even at night.

lets see, taking images of feet hanging over the end of a berth may be OK, people performing Puja, maybe OK, people getting undressed could be questionable, but one thing you most certainly can't do is video shoes on fans.

It's weird, I'd never consider myself a trainspotter, I prefer ginger nuts to digestives, and although I love traveling on Indian trains, I couldn't care less what engine it has etc.

However, given the following options: -

Pay bus fares to travel by plane
Pay air fares to travel by train
Get paid train fares to travel by bus

I'd opt for the train every time.

Glad you cleared that up, I was dying to ask you, whether you were a trainspotter, as you seem to know everthing about them.
Lord, Grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those people I had to kill because they pissed me off.
