Hello,

I've been trying to book trains for my trip to India next month. I was able to activate my cleartrip account following the advice I'd read on this website as well as seat61. I was able to book one train last wednesday january 13th without any issue. I attempted to book more trains on friday, and started recieving one of two error messages each time I filled in my personal details and clicked on "continue to pay":

We could not get the updated availability and price information from IRCTC at this moment. Please try again after a while

or

Oops, we could not authenticate you at this time. Please try resubmitting (or something along those lines)

I've tried using the phone app, and it lets me get a bit further, to the point that I enter my VISA number and the captcha. When I submit the app tells me they couldn't get an availability for the selected train, despite the fact that it says there are 251 seats available before I select that particular train. Another strange thing is that the amount of seats available on these trains hasn't changed much or at all over the past five days.

This has been the case for five days now. I've tried many different times of day, I've called and emailed Cleartrip and gotten various degrees of unhelpful advice. I've looked over the forums on this site, and some people have encountered this problem and got past it but there doesn't seem to be a solution posted anywhere.

If anyone has encountered these and can offer a solution, I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm planning on booking another four trains. Mumbai to Guntakel being the first one on february 22nd. Then to Hospet, Palolem (which takes two trains to get to from Hospet), then Panjim and back to Mumbai.

Which class are you opting for? It does not happen for any of the above mentioned routes?

AC 3. Every route I try, when I confirm my personal details I get one of the error messages. It didn't happen when I booked a train a week ago. I can't figure out what's wrong.

I tried my laptop and PC, both at home, took the laptop to a pub, and tried the phone app. Would trying a completely different PC, say at a family member's house possibly make a difference? The thought had crossed my mind

I'm not sure. I thought about getting one for myself. I'm assuming that the name on the card would have to match the name of the passenger?

Not necessarily .. sure folk do book for family and friends and it's not an airline.

Get one.

No, it doesn't. The Indian Railways don't care whether your tickets are booked using your card or somebody else's, as long as you're able to produce an ID to prove that the people the ticket was booked for are actually the ones travelling.

Ok, good to know. I've also read on here that the Amex card can only come from certain countries, and Canada isn't one of them. Those posts are all a couple years old though. Anyone know if that's still the case?

Thanks everyone, this has been very helpful.
