Hi All,

I am planning a trip from Chennai to Trivandrum in July. I will be travelling with my family. ( 2 adults and 3 kids (Ages 2,4,6 )

We would like berths for the eldest and 4 year old. So in such a case, we pay only for 4 adult fares and my youngest is not charged as he is under 5 correct?

So a total of 4 adult tickets. Years back I traveled just with my wife and they didn't give us the 2-berth-coupe. The goal is to book First AC and get a 4-berth coupe. How hard is it to get this for the whole family?

While booking please opt for berth for the kids for whom You wish to get berths. You will have to pay for the same. That way you will get four berth coupe (provided it is available).

So if it is not available, are they going to be upfront about it? I know they don't tell you what berth you are getting in first class until the day they prepare the chart. It wouldn't be great to get all of us split especially with kids.

Why not choose a 2AC instead? There are more seats in 2AC compared to 1AC.

You are planning to travel between which stations?

Personally not a fan of those curtains.. but with kids, we feel the broad berths will be comfortable when sleeping with a toddler with an adult on the same berth. I would love to travel in sleeper-class but during the summer it is going to be hot.

You put in the age of the 2nd kid as 5 years and opt for berths for the elder two and pay the complete fare.
You cannot book a ticket for a four year old (as per my experience till now - do try with 4 if you can book the berth - would be easier during the verification - but not something that the TTE will haggle on if you put in 5 for a 4 yr old!)
You will get the availability during the booking stage.
I may not recommend booking a W/L ticket in 1st AC if IInd AC tickets are available.

So would that mean you would not travel if you don't get confirmed seats in 1A?

You could check the seat availability before you book the tickets.

So per this release :
http://pib.nic.in/newsite/PrintRelea...x?relid=138458

"Ministry of Railways has decided to revise the child fare rule. Under the revised provision, full adult fare will be charged for children of age 5 years and under 12 years of age if for whom full separate berth/seat (in reserved class) is sought at the time of reservation. However, in case full separate berth/seat is not sought for the children of age 5 years and under 12 years of age at the time of reservation, then half of the adult fare shall continue to be charged subject to the minimum distance for charging.
Children under five years of age will continue to be carried free (without berth) in case of both reserved and unreserved classes.
. "
Children under five years of age will continue to be carried free (without berth) in case of both reserved and unreserved classes. --> so with berth can I not pay full fare for a 4 year old? My issue is even if I lie about kid being 5 instead of 4, wouldn't they ask for identification etc to prove the age?

Agreed even if I booked 2AC, isn't this VIP reservation non-sense still going to be there? Hate to say this and probably not the right forum, but only in our country we have these idiotic reservations for these babus.

Correct me if I am wrong, lets say I decide to buy full-fare for my 4 year old, based on the above post it says that ages 5 and under will travel fee and cannot reserve a berth. Or the rules are different for 2AC?

The VIP reservation is for 1AC mostly. Remember they are Indian VIP's. They will always ask for the moon.

The rules regarding children under 5 is regardless of the class of travel. As soon as you enter the age as 5 or above there will be an option which will ask you to opt for berth or no. If you don't opt for berth then the berth will not be allotted. So do remember that when you are booking the tickets.
