We are booking an AC1 cabin from Delhi to Udaipur. Does a 2 berth give you plenty of room? If you book a 4 berth for two people - will two others then be booked in here with you? And is there any price diff between berths?

Sorry for all the quesis! Cheers Whippet

It's not a private stateroom, it's an open compartment for four (in the two-tier configuration) or six (in the three-tier version). Is it enough room? Why wouldn't it be? 12 million people ride the rails daily in India. They all manage to fit in, some rather comfortably, others smashed in like sardines. You'll be in the former group, not the latter.

Talking ac a comfortable but expencive ride

The above post is correct is open plan not a private compartment. You will be paying 3 or 4 times as much for AC. Traveling 2nd class sleeper is also just fine. You can open the windows and I found people a little more friendly. Try to get yourself a top berth as you will be tucked in out of the way a little more. but thats all a metter of preferance. Please understand that space is always difficult to get on a train and the idea of people booking extra births so thay can have a little extra space is perhaps a little well, lets just say western. Just adapt a little, dive in and swim around in the crowded but always social and friendly train experience. If you have any problem your friendly conductor can always help. Sometimes a 20 - 50 rp tip will buy you all kinds of miracles.

In 1AC there are 4 berth & 2 berth compartments. You can not just buy 4 tickets & two of you travel occupying a 4 berth compartment. If you are 2 people opt for the 2 bert coupe.

A 4 berth compartment consists of 2 berths (Upper and Lower) facing another identical 2 berths, there is a large floor space between both sets of berths, there is a window (sealed and slightly tinted) at the end of each of the lower berths.

A 2-berth coupe consists of 2 berths (Upper and Lower), the same floor space there is in a 4-berth compartment, then a plain wall where the other 2 berths should be.

There is considerably more space (per person) in a coupe than in a 4 berth compartment, but somehow it doesn't feel like it.

A few reasons for this...

1, There is more than enough space in a 4 berth compartment.

2, There is only one window in a coupe.

3, The wall in the coupe seems to spoil the whole atmosphere, when you're sitting you're staring at this wall.

If you really want to be alone, choose a coupe, otherwise a 4 berth compartment will be fine, if the others in the 4 berth are India, their English will be as good as yours.

There is no guarantee of a coupe, you state your choice when booking, but the berths are only allocated 4 hours before departure, single women (or a couple of women) are the first choice of Indian Railways for the coupes.

If you really want a coupe, tell them you will be travelling with a small dog, there is a very small charge for the dog, but you have to be given a coupe (if there are 2 of you), when you turn up for your berths, tell them you changed your mind about the dog, the berths will have already been allocated.

....................and only very few Trains have full IAC Coaches, that is, 3 four- Berthed Coupes ,3x 4 = 12 Berths + 3 two-berthed coupes, 3x2=6 = 18 Berths,
whereas most of the trains have got half-IAC Coach in which there will be 2 four-berthed coupes + 1 two-berthed coupe = 10 Berths.
