When I'm in India I'd like to try a few different train journeys, most of which are overnight. I'd also like to experience first class, 2AC and sleeper class... I am on a budget therefore which of the following overnight journeys is best for first class in terms of cost / experience. Maybe there are different trains that offer differing experiences. Likewise, if any of these journerys are specifically memorable conducted as a day trip please let me know!

Goa - Mumbai
Varanasi - Agra
Jodhpur to Jaisailmer or
Delhi - Amritsar.

Thanks.

Fares are directly related to distance. You also pay a bit more for faster trains. Rajdhani's, Shatabdis and Durontos usually include meals in the fares and are a bit more upmarket.

Delhi- Amritsar is not especially scenic but there are 2 fast Shatabdis each day in each direction. The First Class equivalent on these is Executive Class which is roomy and comfortable

I've only done the line between Mumbai and Goa in the dark but it is supposed to be quite scenic. If travelling in 2AC or 3AC in the day a Side berth (Upper or Lower) is a good call as you get to be next to the window.

When are you travelling? Sleeper Class (SL) can get cold overnight in the north during winter. I did Jodhpur - Jaisalmer in Unreserved which was cheap and mainly fun although you need a scarf or something similar for the sand drifting in off the desert.

If you had to make one of these journeys during the day, I would definitely suggest Goa - Mumbai. The route is extremely scenic, heading up the coast, passing through dense forests and boring through massive hills. The Mandovi Express is slow but offers a relaxed day tour of the route and has a wide variety of tasty food available on board.

A faster day train is the Jan Shatabdi Express. If you are travelling on that train, go AC Chair Car, not Second Class - the latter can get quite uncomfortable after a while.

To be frank, none of the other routes will be particularly fun by non-AC Sleeper. I'd recommend 2AC for Varanasi - Agra and 3AC for the other two journeys.

Thanks I'll be going end Jan and throughout Feb 2014. Already aware that some thermals and fleece might be useful on night time. I've seen a tv programme about the Konkan express which made it look brilliant, it's a long day trip though and the pro of the night train is it save accommodation costs.

Not sure I could do a long train ride in the day - maybe 5-6 hours is more acceptable. I will be using train from Agra - Ranthambore and then on to Jaipur so those will probably be my day trip experiences.
