In the Quick Book option of IRCTC, there is a option to choose the boarding station to beat the quota problem. I used it few years ago and worked well. But when i try to do the same now (few months ago), my booking went ahead with boarding station quota and not the from station quota.. But before booking, it showed me the from station quota as available.. How it is possible and i dont remember what hap to the train fare taken by IRCTC... Can anyone comment on this? thanks.

PS: I m new to this forum and finding it very useful. I can share many of my experiences when i see some questions..

Let me rephrase the question. There is "a proof for blood relation" required if one needs to get the name of a passenger changed in an e-ticket. One of the document mentioned so far is a "ration card". I don't have this document - then what other document they can accept as proof for blood relation? The query is specific to replacing my mother's name by my brother's in the e-ticket which has got me as one of the passengers. Is showing my and my brother's passports carrying our father's name can work? What else can work?

A common surname should do. Yes, passports/voter cards/PAN will do. Or Birth certificate with mom's name on it.

Can I change passenger name to someone who is not in my family ?

Hi,
I have booked online tickets for 2 people viz my mom & her friend(of course different surnames). But now, my mom's friend is facing health issues & hence my mom is considering taking her other friend with her. Though the age of both the friends of my mom is almost same, but the surnames ofcourse are different. All I want to ask is that, can my mom take her other friend with her ? Can we change the name in the passenger list ? Or if nothing is possible, then what would be the fine payable to the ticket checker if her other friend goes with her ? Hope he won't make her leave the train :s

Waiting for an quick reply, Thanks in advance

Is it an e-ticket?
In that case, ID Proof in original of any one of the passenger would do. The TTE would not enquire about the other passenger till the time the gender and the age matches.
If it is a Counter Ticket, in that case absolutely no ID Proof (Hope it is a general ticket and not a Tatkal). Criteria should remain the same as mentioned above.

As someone has truly said.. "What's in a name".. ??

The new friend would be treated as traveling without ticket. And traveling without ticket is a crime.

Rule 536 of Chapter V says: (a) If a railway servant detects a passenger travelling without a ticket or with an improper ticket with intent to defraud the railway, he should be arrested and produced before a Magistrate within a period of twenty four hours of such arrest excluding the time necessary for the journey from the place of arrest to the court of the Magistrate.

It would be nice to take care

First of all, I would thank both of you for helping me with my problem... & to be more specific, I would tell a few more points:
I had booked e-tickets & my mom could easily carry a original photo id proof & even her friend could carry but her info would ofcourse be different as I had booked the ticket for her other friend. Though I felt relieved after I went through the first answer, but looking at the post below that, I am again very worried. Paying a fine is okay, but arresting...Doesn't that sound too horrible ? What would be the reaction of my mom's friend if this situation comes ? Even though she is of exactly around the same age as my mom's other friend & both are women ofcourse, but then what if the ticket checker asks for her id ? Should she carry her photo id too ? Or would that cause a problem ? Can she consider moving to the toilet when the ticket checker comes & let my mom go through the checking process with her photo id & the ticket ? But what if the Ticket checker asks for my mom's friend photo id only to find different identities ? What could be the outcomes in such cases ?

I know I might be sounding stupid but to be honest, I am pinned in this situation bot knowing whether to let go off the tickets or take this risk ...
