Hi all,
I'm looking at the Jaipur 23:45 - Jaisalmer 11:15 train. I'd like to sleep for a few hours in 2nd AC, but in the past I'm woken up by the CHAI people and can't sleep after that. Given the scenery, I'd like to relocate to a place without tinted windows and have the chance to door watch.

How do I go about moving to sleeper class? Should I buy two tickets, one from Jaipur - X in 2AC and another from X to Jaisalmer in SL? Or is there an easier way?

For X, maybe someone has a suggestion too. I identified Pokaran at 08:43, with a 25 minute stop... enough time to find my car and breakfast

Why not? I've done it on previous trips and will do it again on our imminent one. Pokaran is as good a place as any.

Just buy the two tickets. Make sure that you have a scarf or similar to cover your face. The desert is pretty dusty.

My only caveat is that there will be more competition for doors in Sleeper but if you book a side berth you will get a window that can be opened.

Oh I have no problem with this, but I didn't know if there's a built-in system for this when booking tickets. Thanks!

When is it that you want to go ? By the time it is dawn/day break, the train goes through dull, bland countryside for most of the time. It gets hot and dusty pretty fast.

Febraury. The time I wanted was actually filled in AC2 and 3 with a significant waitlist. I'm #2 on a waitlist for sleeper. I've never slept on a sleeper before, so this should be interesting. I'll have a pillow and blanket for the temps.

The chances of getting off #2 for waitlist on SL are pretty high, right? I booked on cleartrip if it makes a difference

Yes to waitlist. Early Feb will be cold, late Feb will be sortof-kindof hot ! I went in late Feb, and by 1030AM it was rather hot and dusty in the platform where I got down to get some fried spicy snacks.

New question (based on the old question).
I bought a minimally-waitlisted sleeper class ticket from Jaipur to Jaisalmer, and a heavily-waitlisted AC2 ticket from Jaipur to Pokaran. If the latter isn't confirmed, I'll take the sleeper class ticket and get a refund for the AC2. If it is confirmed, I'd like to switch from AC2 to SL as I said before in Pokaran. According to this (search for CHANGE OF BOARDING POINT), I'm permitted to do this, but need to confirm with them. Does what I said sound right?

Change of boarding point request has to be made at least 24 hours in advance in writing. It is not guaranteed that the request will be granted.

In that case, maybe I should buy another sleeper class ticket from Pokaran to Jaisalmer? Is it ok to have a ticket and not use it (no penalty)? It's my last train trip in india this visit if it makes a difference.

Yes it is okay to have a ticket and not use it. Usually if one buys a ticket from X to Y and the person does not board at X the ticket checker has the right to allocate that seat to another passenger (mostly RAC one).

And doing so won't cancel my other tickets on the same train?

Each ticket booked on a PNR are independent. They do not have any impact on tickets booked on a different PNR.
